The Interview
It was Nia Harries' first job interview after she had gained her master's degree in applied informatics and she was nervous. She knew Torchwood only ever hired the best. Though she wondered whether that could acually be true considering most of her fellow students had known about this secret organization before they ever approached her. And so did most of the Cardiff population, albeit unclear what they were doing in particular. Apparently not being majorly secretive.
A Gwen Cooper waited for her at a tourist office near the bay that was just screaming 'entrance to secret underground base'. Upon entering said secret underground base (they called it the hub) she was almost certain she'd seen a pterosaurs circling the water tower. She decided not to ask just now. Miss Cooper showed her to the board room and she was introduced to Cpt. Jack Harkness, her future boss – hopefully.
The interview went well, her references and attitude seemed to please Captain Harkness. No surprises there, she had been the best of her class and of course she got the job. After the official part was over Nia got the feeling Cpt. Harkness wanted to indulge in small talk and he ordered coffee via the intercom.
A young man, probably her age, came in and set a tablet onto the table, "Thank you, Ianto. Uhm, do you want me to pour you a cup, too?" Ianto smiled at him and nodded. "Do you take sugar or milk in your coffee Miss Harries?" Cpt. Harhness asked without looking up, concentrating on pouring the coffee for Ianto.
"Thank you. I don't drink coffee. I already smelled it when I came in earlier. Urgh. Trust me, coffee is one of the things that'll never pass these lips again." Nia answered with a nonchalant smile.
Both of the men's heads flew around. She noticed a disturbing facial expression on them that could only be described as shock and maybe incredulity. She got the distinct feeling that something about her answer had been utterly wrong. Ianto smirked, looking at Harkness whose features increasingly darkened. He turned his head to look at Nia and with a huge smug on his face he simply said : "Ok, that's it. You're fired!"
