The Best Kind of Meta
Hideyoshi's palm idly rested on the windowsill and his fingers thoughtlessly clutched the wall, supporting his body weight as he leaned to stare outside. His tangerine eyes were in a daze as they reflected the cascading water being evicted from the melancholy grey overcast, and his right arm moved as he delicately traced the rain sliding down the windowpane with his finger. The library's heating ventilation faintly ruffled the clumps of his marmalade hair, and to Kaneki who was sitting at a desk just behind him, he thoroughly resembled a cat having been defeated by the downpour.
Twisting his head, Hideyoshi's pink lips frowned in dejection and his eyes full of heartache looked longingly at Kaneki.
"It's not my fault you forgot your umbrella," Kaneki informed him without taking his eyes off the book he was reading.
Hideyoshi's eyes quivered in despair.
"Look, Hide, I really want to read this, and I've already borrowed the maximum number of books I can, so I'm going to have to stay here and read it. If you want, you can just take my umbrella."
"But then Kaneki would get wet."
Kaneki sighed. "Then you'll just have to wait so we can walk home together."
"But I'm bored!"
"Read a book."
Hideyoshi squinted at him in annoyance. Scrunching up his eyes, he yawned and stood up. Walking over to Kaneki's desk, he sat opposite to him, and glared intently at him with a serious expression.
"You know, Kaneki, there's someone out in the rain waving to you," he informed him in a monotone voice while pointing at the window.
Kaneki jumped and quickly shut his book. Running up to the window, he scanned the entire lot. "What the hell, Hide! There's no one out there!" Stomping back to his seat, he scolded Hideyoshi, "If you bug me one more time, I'm going to lock myself in one of the cubicles."
Hideyoshi looked down in rejection and nodded.
Kaneki rolled his eyes and sat down. Opening up his book, his skin went shockingly pale as he stared at the graphic depiction of a man furiously thrusting into another man.
Hideyoshi held his hands over his mouth in an attempt to stifle his chuckles as Kaneki's eyes widened in horror and his mouth curled with nausea. Pulling the BL manga out from between the pages of Kaneki's novel, Hideyoshi smiled at Kaneki giddily.
"I don't feel so good. I think I'm going to go home now."
Hideyoshi made a silent celebratory gesture, and then put the manga back into his bag.
Kaneki shifted his eyes at Hideyoshi in confusion. "Um, aren't you going to put that back on the shelf?"
"Why? I own this."
"Oh."
