"Where the bloody hell is everyone?" Rebekah questioned as she strode into the room.

"It's over, Rebekah," Elijah answered quietly from his place at the window, drawing Rebekah's attention. At his words, she could feel the panic begin to well up.

"Where is mother?"

"We have no mother, only Esther, and Esther was right."

"What do you mean?" Rebekah asked, her tone showing her confusion. Esther had tried to kill them. Their own mother. There was nothing right about her.

"All my talk of virtue...when it suits my needs I kill, maim, and torment. And today I terrorized an innocent." The pain in his voice was clear and Rebekah couldn't understand it.

"Elena is hardly innocent," the blonde began angrily. She had literally stabbed her in the back. An innocent, indeed.

"And I used your hatred of her to get what I wanted. Wielded you like I would a sword. My sister."

"You did it to protect us, Elijah! And rightly so," Rebekah reasoned. She didn't have a problem with it so why should he? "We deserve to live. We are better than they are."

"Are we?" The look her gave her made her feel foolish, like a scolded child. "Mother made us vampires, she didn't make us monsters. We did that to ourselves." Rebekah stayed quiet and Elijah began to walk away.

"So you're just gonna leave me here?" Her voice made him pause. He had expected her to try to stop him. What he hadn't expected was for her to sound so young, so lost, so like that little girl he used to know before she had lived too much, seen too much. He said nothing.

"Don't go. You promised me. You promised me forever!" It was true, he had, but so many promises had been broken between the three siblings over the years, what weight did that one hold? He took another step and he could hear the tears in her voice this time.

"Please, Lijah, please. Don't leave. I need you. Please. I'll do better. I'll be better. I swear. I swear," she pleaded, babbling it out past her cries. Elijah could feel his heart clench painfully in his chest. All he could see was his baby sister who used to follow him around all day and tell him that he was her hero. The little girl who needed her big brother but she wasn't that girl and he had to tell himself not to look back. If he looked back, he would want to comfort her. He would want to tell her that he would never leave her and he would ask her to go with him but the truth was that Rebekah would never leave Niklaus and as long as she was with Niklaus, she would never change.

Elijah kept walking.
