Kiss Me At Midnight

Much to her dismay, she was alone. She had no one to blame, well no one but him. How could he do this to her? This day of all days. She should have known when he told her to just meet him there, that in itself should have hinted to her how the night would turn out.

It was nearly ten o'clock and still there she was, a wallflower, but not by choice. Even if there were people there she knew she had no way of recognizing anyone seeing as they were all wearing masks. She felt invisible in this sea of people and she wanted to go home.

He saw her. From the moment he walked into the ballroom he was instantly drawn. At first he was unsure of the figure standing before him, it had been quite a few years but he knew it was her. Her hair was pinned up with a few loose curls falling around her face; much different than the straight hair he was used to. She wore a white beaded gown, clearly designed just for her. Her face was hidden under a beautiful white lace mask, but there was no hiding those striking blue eyes. Without any further hesitation he made his way across the ballroom.

She saw him approaching, unsure of why this stranger was coming toward her. There was no denying that he did look very handsome. He was dressed in a deep blue suit, looking a lot like prince charming; she assumed that was what he was going for. She tried to see if she could recognize him but nothing came to her, and the mask he wore hid most of his face.

He finally stood directly in front of her and when he asked for a dance she accepted, not knowing why she felt so comfortable to do so. One dance turned into another and soon enough nearly two hours had passed. Neither of the two noticed anyone else was there as they moved in synch with each other across the dance floor.

His thoughts were interrupted when he seen a blond haired man enter the room. He knew he was coming for her, even over the loud music he could hear him calling her name.

10…9…8…

She couldn't hear anything, her attention still on the man holding her in his arms.

7…6…5…

He knew the moment was over and there was nothing he could do about it. He was so close, but he knew it wouldn't last forever, it was too good to be true.

Without hesitation he leaned down to her, looked into her eyes as if asking for permission. She leaned in toward him slightly. He smiled taking this as her approval before closing the gap between them. His lips pressed gently upon hers kissing her the way he had always wanted too, and to his surprise, she kissed back.

4…3…2…

"Rory?" The voice still faint but interrupted their embrace, he knew he was almost to them and would spot her any second.

He reluctantly broke from their kiss and released her from his hold. He leaned in one last time and whispered in her ear. "Goodbye, Mary."

1…

She had no time to react, within a split second she was being spun around into the arms of another; she was met with the eyes of the man she was supposed to be in love with.

"Happy New Year Ace" And with that he wrapped her up in his arms and kissed her. A single tear sliding down her cheek.
