How Did It Happen? Can It Be Fixed?

Disclaimer: I unfortunately own nothing in this story except for the plot. And any characters that I might need to make up, but are as of yet not in my brain! Sigh.

Plot: This is a Trory, but it's gonna take it's time moving around the storyline and the characters. Tristan did not get sent to military school, Rory broke up with Dean, and has/was been with Tristan for almost a year now. Have fun, and enjoy!

Chapter 1: The End of the Beginning

They stood on either side of a deserted hallway, their words echoing.

"I can't do it anymore!" Her declaration was like a gunshot wound.

His face hardened, and she saw his features close up, leaving his face void of any emotion. "What Ror? What about us is so repulsive?"

Rory gasped for air and she swallowed a mouthful of salt-water. "We fight too much, and everything is just falling apart. The rumors, the lies, the attempts to ruin what we have- had- and GOD! It just never ends."

"Is that it? I'll make it stop. I'll go now and beat the crap out of anyone who-"

"That's just it Tristan. They only multiply when you do that. You beating someone up isn't going to stop this from eventually happening. "

"I. Damn it Rory! I just don't understand!"

"You will one day." The tears were coming faster now, and Rory was having trouble saying what she was trying to think. "One day, something will happen. You or I will make a mistake, and all of this will crumble. Nothing will matter then. I have to do this now. I can't explain it."

"Explain this."

Tristan crossed the hallway in two strides and trapped her against the lockers, one arm on each side of her head. Rory shivered as she felt the electricity crackling between their bodies. She ducked under Tristan's arm to walk away, but she felt his fingers close over her wrist, not allowing her to escape. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, preparing herself for one last stand. Grabbing her shoulders, Tristan spun her around, and closed the distance between their bodies.

As his lips crushed on hers, he held her firmly around the waist, giving her no means of flight. Rory couldn't control he wave of emotions she felt. She went limp in Tristan's grip, forcing him to hold her up, keep her standing. She moaned for him to deepen the kiss, and then suddenly-

Rory broke away. Although Tristan's arms were wrapped tightly around her body, she struggled to escape.

"That wasn't that bad, was it Mary?"

She began to cry again, and punch him. He stood and let her, until her previously incoherent sobs became words.

"I hate you! I hate you!"

Over and over again the words rang in his ears, reverberating through the hallway. Tristan grabbed her small hands, looked her straight in the eye and asked for the truth. She cried harder.

Finally Rory broke free from his embrace and ran down the hallway and out the main doors, leaving a broken-hearted Tristan behind.
