The Two of Us
The Red Sun
Prologue
This chapter, the prologue, is all about the events that happened the day before Kirino's graduation.
"You look very beautiful in that Yukata, Kirino. No wonder that—" She abruptly stopped because Kirino was staring blankly at the floor in pure silence and isolation. She was spacing out. "Kirino, are you alright?" Her ever worried best friend looked at her and checked her forehead if she had any signs of fever.
"I-I'm fine! Don't worry about me." She laughed frantically.
"How can't I worry if you're spacing out like that!?"
"Ah, it's nothing. You're just over thinking things..."
"Just talk to me. I'm always here for you." It was very painful to watch her dearest friend suffer like this; she wanted to hug her and be her Aniki forever but she could not. No one could ever replace him not only in her heart but also in her life – nothing will ever change that.
Without saying any words, she smiled back at her.
"Hey! What are you two doing? Hurry up! It's already starting." Kanako shouted.
"Let's go, Kirino! They are waiting for us." She grabbed her hands and together, they ran to the stage for their presentation at the school festival.
This year, their class was assigned to dance Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance that welcomes the dead spirits. Considering that the majority of the students especially the men were childish, they were pretty lucky because other classes got traditional dance and drama. Well, in the first place, even if they got kabuki, in the long run, it would not matter for them, said the class president, because they got Ayase, the femme fatale of the campus. Even if they performed horribly, the audience impact would make up for it. Immediately, after saying that, the class president took a hell of a beating from Ayase and became the laughing stock.
Now, leaving those good memories in the past, they were now on the stage performing their dance. This was their last performance together as a class for tomorrow would be their graduation. On the stage, Kirino could not stop staring where her family was sitting. She could see and hear mom and dad cheering for her –even Ria that just came back from America was there making funny faces. While dancing, she could not help to smile and laugh at the same time. Into her surprise, tears started to flow down involuntarily as she imagined Kyousuke, her ever loving brother who always supported her, watching her from afar.
"What an idiot! T-that's why y-you—" With all her might, she held it in.
Down to the last routine, Kirino tried wiping her tears but she could not because she was at the center. Everybody would notice her extra movements thus ruining the dance. Being the role model of the class for the last day, she could not afford that.
"This is really embarrassing" She glanced at Ayase and they both laughed.
Finally, their dance was all over and they were back on their classrooms for the last minute reminder for graduation. Their adviser told them not to be late for tomorrow and advised the boys with long hair to visit the barber shop. Before dismissing the class, their homeroom teacher said his parting words and announced that they were the winners of the contest. The class roared and celebrated in every corner of the room. The atmosphere became emotional but at the same time happy to say the least.
"Kirino, are you going to Tokyo at this hour?" Kanako asked excitedly.
"Yeah, I have a date with Ayase~" Kirino replied jokingly.
"EHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
"Kirino 3"
The girls immediately proceeded to the comfort room to change but into their surprise, it was full of students, who had also the same idea as them. They lined up and luckily, Kirino finished first.
"Kanako, Ayase! I'll wait at grounds."
"Hai..hai!" Both replied.
Sitting alone on the stage where they performed just a while ago, she watched the janitor clean the area and the students leaving the campus' gate. For it was quiet, she whistled her favorite song 'irony' but she got terribly bored and started playing the popular game candy crush on her phone. After thirty minutes, irritated because she could not clear the level, Kirino ran out of gas. "Moh, why are they taking so long?!" She stopped playing and went to the comfort room to check on them. Upon entering, they were not there. She checked her phone and there was a mail notification from Ayase. It turned out that they transferred to the gymnasium since they wanted to take a shower also.
After venturing to the dark hallways of the campus, she reached the grounds where Ria outrun her in front of Kyousuke. It was where he shouted and admitted that he had a sister complex. She smiled upon remembering those good memories but deep inside, she was lonely.
Finally, she reached the complex. It was dark except the bathroom, and in the darkness, she saw the stage and vacant chairs already set for their graduation. "So tomorrow will be the last day of being a middle-school student, eh?" And in speaking of a soon-to-be a liberated high-school students, the moment she entered the bathroom, she heard something scandalous behind the white noise produced by the showers.
"Ahhh! Don't be so rough!"
"Ayase, you're so~"
"Ah~!"
"EH!? What the actual fuck are you two doing!?"
"Faster, Kanako~"
"I'm disappointed! Ayase can't be this lewd!"
It turned out that Kanako was trying to steal Ayase's towel because she did not bring one; it was just a single tug of war between Ayase and Kanako but Kirino totally misinterpreted it.
"Ugh, take your time, you two…" she replied.
"Kirino, no! This is not what you think!"
"Ah, puberty at its finest. Enjoy yourselves." Kirino left the room, drooling.
"Kirino! Ayase is very eroi! Come and join us~"
"Shut up, bitch!" Ayase just threw a bar of soap on Kanako's face which knocked her out cold.
After the wild expedition, she returned to the stage and noticed that there were no students around the campus since it was already past nine in the evening so instead of playing, to ease her boredom, she stood up and started to dance the Bon Odori again.
"To be honest, I'm starting to like this." She removed her sandals and danced bare footed .Just like in practice, she repeated the steps repeatedly to perfection. Actually, she danced it more skilfully compared to the presentation earlier. "Really, I'm doomed if someone sees me doing this. They will think I'm retarded or something."
After finishing the half of the routine, suddenly, she caught a glimpse of a person from a distance. Spooked, she immediately stopped dancing. She was ready to yell at that person but upon seeing his face, she could not speak and her legs began to tremble.
"No…that's….-!" It was surreal that she even tried pinching herself as if she was trying to wake up from a dream or rather a nightmare.
With her feet planted to the ground, she saw Kyousuke, sitting at the stands where Ria sat during the program, laughing and giggling unstoppably at her. He was wearing a burnt brown jacket and black pants; they were all worn off and covered in blood. His one shoe was missing and his left ankle and arm was badly twisted. His face was badly bruised and he lost some of his hair on the top side for his skull was badly fractured. She also noticed that Kyousuke was holding something at his side. It was a ripped Meruru gift box straight from Akihabara. He was carrying it all along up until to this time. It was his last promised gift for her beloved and precious sister.
This was too much for her. She could not go near him. No words could describe her feelings so she closed her eyes and tightly held her heart shaped pendant which contained the ashes of him.
Upon opening her eyes again, she saw darkness enveloped her brother and similar to an apparition he disappeared without a trace.
"Hey, Kirino! Sorry for waiting-" They saw Kirino standing silently at the center of the stage. "Oi, what are you doin', let's go~" Kanako added.
"Kirino?"
"Hey…"
"…" She was not responding.
"Hey, Kirino are you alright-"
"Kirino?" Ayase approached her and held her cold hands.
"K I R I-"
"KIRINO!?"
"Hey, talk to me! KIRINO!" She was shaking uncontrollably and her eyes were cloudy.
"For God sake, snap out of it!" But she was not there.
"Kanako! Do something!" She was having a panic attack and Ayase could not get through her.
"Kirino, where's your medicine?!" Kanako immediately scrambled for her bag.
"Hey, talk to me!" Both of them began to panic. They did not know what to do but fortunately, the school doctor, who was preparing to leave the school at the parking lot, saw them. He noticed that there was something wrong so he immediately rushed to their aid. Eventually, after the struggle, Kirino calmed down and regained her senses.
Despite of what had happened to her last night, the sun unfolds his glorious light as Kirino prepared herself for the future, the last day of being a middle-school student.
