Prologue
.
.
They say all mermaids' eyes are dark –soulless. Because they are sinners; women shadowed by tragedy; girls fallen from grace and condemned by jealous Gods; and some even believe they lurk in the bellies of deep water, hiding to lure innocent sailors into sea. But the truth? Brittany had never seen more beautiful eyes than Santana's, not even at church, where angels supposedly live.
"My cousin told me he eats humans so that he can have the warmth of their soul. That that's the only way mermaids like us can bear through the change of the water temperate when winter hits." The sudden look of terror that stroke the bright blue iris of Brittany's eyes and made her pupil cower caused her to instinctively reach out and reassure the little girl, "Oh I would never do that to you Britt-Britt."
Brittany drew closer to the ocean, until the toes of her feet were lost to the moving tides, so close that occasionally, her heels became swallowed by the incoming wave. "I know San, I trust you." Besides, Brittany knew that Santana's cousin was lying. There was no way her Santana would ever do something so ugly as eating another person, no one so wonderful could ever do such a horrible thing.
An almost shy smile crosses Santana's perfectly curved, rose-tinted lips before she whispers back, "I trust you too." In fact Brittany was the only human she ever could. Even though she would never willingly admit it, other land-walkers terrified her. While humans grew up listening to silly things like vampires, or monsters under the bed, she grew up with tales of the destruction the humans caused- still cause, and how they would trap her in a glass covered tub if any one of them were to ever find her. However from the moment she first spotted Brittany, she knew that she would be harmless, there was no way someone with tears the size of Venus hurling down her cheeks could ever hurt her. When she was around Brittany, Santana felt safe, she felt like she was home. "So what did you do at school today?"
Brittany's eye immediately widen as a new spark of light filtered through them, much like the bubbly nature of her voice, everything else about the blonde emitted of warmth. Sometimes Santana liked to link their pinkies together, said it made her whole hand start to feel again –that it tingled. In the beginning it had confused Brittany, but it didn't take long before she realized how cold Santana's finger always felt. "We learned about fish today…" Santana smiled encouragingly as she half-heartedly listened to the words, she was much more drawn to the sound of the blonde's voice. It didn't take long before she started to lull off, lately she hadn't been able to rest properly, she always felt like her bed was too empty or too cold, but hearing Brittany made every discomfort melt away. "San? …Sweet dreams Santana."
Author's note: An idea that spurred from late night sleep-deprivation, one Friday. Kids, stay in school. Also if you can figure out all the little symbolism that relates back to mermaid myths, brownie points! This was posted as a test run, as much as I enjoy writing, I'm not the most consistent writer out there. If enough interest is shown, I'll continue, if not, it'll be updated on my basis (I have no basis xD) Either case, thanks for the read!
P.s: Sorry for the length, it'll get longer.
