I always knew I was different. I had a punk rock style but was still femine. I also had a black belt in karate and I could speak ASL because my mom was deaf.

Boys never interested me or understood me. They flirted with me and called me pretty, and I only wanted to punch them in the face. But I held back because it was not worth all the trouble.

I didn't have many friends, save for one. His name was Hiccup and he was also born deaf like my mom. We hung out every day together.

It was only when Hiccup started dating a girl named Camicazi, I started to feel lonely. I still didn't care. I didn't need anyone.

But then the next day at school, I crashed into someone. It was a girl my age and height. She had black hair and green eyes, and she blushed when I stared at her. She looked like a goth girl. That is when I fell in love for the first time.

"How do I know she likes me back?" I asked Hiccup in sign language.

Hiccup chuckled like a goof. "You just have to see and find out."

I groaned out loud and although Hiccup couldn't hear me he laughed at my reaction.

"Well, your girlfriend is here," I signed seeing Camicazi walking towards us. "I see you later."

Camicazi waved and I waved back.

I stared at Heather in the classroom and would look away when she stared back.

How do I ask her out?

When the class bell rang, I rushed over to her and said "hi"

"Hi, Astrid," she said and smiled at me.

"Heather, I was wondering if you want to.. I don't know, go out with me?"

Heather smiled brilliantly. "I would love to!"

I blushed, knowing she might have interpreted the question wrong. "I mean on a date."

Heather's smile vanished and she looked shocked. I felt my heart break and wanted to run away when she grabbed my hand.

"I would love to," she said again. "I have had a crush on you since I saw you."

I smiled at her. "Me too."

I felt like the happiest girl in the world.
