Wolverine Protection

Why are people so confusing? Wolf had been wondering that question for some time when he noticed Torak was looking rather cold and hungry. He sighed. Why couldn't he catch something from the fast-wet? Surely he didn't have to do all the work?

Suddenly there was a smell. A strange, unfamiliar smell and he didn't like it. His ears pricked up and he stopped walking, Torak stopped as well. What is it Wolf? The man was asking him. Wolf growled as if to say he needed silence and he continued to listen, his ears pricked, his nose rose, smelling the scent that could only mean one thing: the bear was coming. He turned, grabbing Torak, and pulling him back the way they had come, wondering if the man could even run fast enough to escape the danger that was looming. Luckily for Wolf, he could. He was running faster than he had done before, but struggling to keep up with the frantic running of the Wolf.

Wolf knew he would have to get Torak to safety, then fight the bear himself or at least lead it away. Torak was too precious and needed to be kept away from the bear although he didn't know why. He led Torak to a cave, then, nose raised, he ran from the cave. He ran as fast as he could, taking the nanuak with him to protect Torak. He heard the man's cry of annoyance at having lost the nanuak but when the bear went past the cave a few minutes later he was thankful for Wolf saving him.

After what seemed like hours of waiting for Wolf he decided to risk calling him. There was no reply. Torak walked for days, feeling tired, cold and hungry, but the thing he missed the most was Wolf. As he entered another forest he saw trails of blood, and huge paw prints that obviously belonged to the bear. They were a couple of hours old which meant either the bear had gone back or had gone on. He hoped Wolf would be ok. He no longer cared about the nanuak, just about Wolf.

He called him again, this time receiving an answer, although very faint. And it was Wolf. His Wolf. He had never felt so relieved in his life. Despite feeling unbearably hungry, tired and cold, he ran towards where Wolf had answered him from and a few hours later they were reunited. Wolf had caught some food for them both as well so Torak set up a fire, prepared the food and settled down to sleep, knowing Wolf would look after him.
