You and I were, you and I were fire.
You and I were, you and I were fire.
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fire

Dolph sighed as he took another swig of his beer, the liquid burning its way down his throat.

"You've been drinking all day," A voice spoke from behind him. He waved them off and chugged down the last of the beer. Hell, he'd be drinking hard liquor right now if it weren't for his mom cutting him off about an hour ago.

"Come on, Dolph. It's been 6 years," The man shrugged as he stared out the glass doors, watching as a tall man laughed and talked with other people.

It was the fourth of July
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks
That went off too soon
And I miss you in the June gloom, too

"Can't you just move on?" Dolph remained quiet. The man whom he was watching looked up and locked eyes with the blonde. Both men swallowed hard as they stared back at each other.

"Shit!" Dolph hissed when the beer bottle slipped from his hands and shattered on the ground. He kneeled down and grabbed the large chunks of glass, walking over to the trashcan and letting them go into the bag.

"You need help?" A deep voice rumbled from behind Dolph, making him jump. The blonde shook his head and swallowed hard. "How have you been?"

"I've been o-okay…" The big man stepped closer to Dolph.

"It's been 6 long years since we've seen each other," Dolph nodded.

"It's been 6 years since I've been home."

"I hope I had nothing to do with-" The man stopped when he saw the look on Dolph's face. He nodded slowly. "I'm sorry."

"I heard that one before," It came out harsher than Dolph had meant for it too, but it was how he felt.

"Remember our junior year when we had a bonfire at the beach?" He nodded. "To this day, that's still the best Fourth of July I've ever had."

"Why?"

"It was the night you finally kissed me," Dolph smiled and looked down, his cheeks burning.

It was the fourth of July
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks
I said I'd never miss you
But I guess you'll never know
Where the bridges I have burned never led back home
On the fourth of July

"You remember that?" The man nodded and stepped closer to Dolph.

"Of course I remember. We were lying in the sand, you were all wrapped up in my arms because you claimed the blankets weren't enough," They both chuckled.

"That was right after you'd cut your hair. I hated how short it was," Dolph admired the extremely long black curls that fell over the man's broad shoulders.

I'll be as honest as you let me
I miss your early morning company
If you get me
You are my favorite "what if"
You are my best "I'll never know"

"You refused to let me touch you for a week after that," They both laughed again.

"We have always had some pretty great Fourth of July memories."

"Agreed."

I'm starting to forget
Just what summer ever meant to you
What did it ever mean to you?

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean any of it
I just got too lonely, lonely, whoa
In between being young and being right
You were my Versailles at night

"I really am sorry, Dolph. I know I hurt you terribly," Dolph bit his lip. He turned and opened the fridge, pulling out another beer. "Another one? That's the third one you've had since I walked in."

"You're not my mother," They both got quiet.

"How many times do I have to say I'm sorry before you get over it?"

"Saying sorry after you break someone's heart doesn't actually work, Roman. You know that right?" Roman sighed and shook his head.

It was the fourth of July
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks
That went off too soon
And I miss you in the June gloom, too
It was the fourth of July
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks
I said I'd never miss you
But I guess you'll never know
Where the bridges I have burned never led back home
On the fourth of July

My 9 to 5 is cutting open old scars
Again and again 'til I'm stuck in your head
Had my doubts, but I let them out
You are the drought
And I'm the holy water you have been without

"I made more than one mistake that night, Dolph. Telling you that I didn't love you was the absolute biggest mistake of my life. I've regretted it ever since," Dolph gulped down some of his beer and scowled at the Samoan.

"You told me that the day after it happened, and then went out that night, got drunk again and cheated on me," Roman clenched his jaw tightly.

"I don't know what else to say other than I'm fucking sorry, Dolph!"

"Why the fuck are you even here, Roman? To make my home coming shitty?!"

"Your mom invited me… You never told her what happened between us?" Dolph shook his head.

"She loved you almost as much as I did…"

"Dolph," Roman stepped closer and Dolph stepped backward. He adverted his gaze and sniffled.

"I gotta go," Dolph quickly turned and walked out of the kitchen, not looking back.

And all my thoughts of you
They could heat or cool the room
And no, don't tell me you're crying
Oh, honey, you don't have to lie

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean any of it
I just got too lonely, lonely, whoa
In between being young and being right
You were my Versailles at night

It was the fourth of July
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks
That went off too soon
And I miss you in the June gloom, too
It was the fourth of July

On the fourth of July

"Come on, Dolph! It's time for fireworks!" His mom called him excitedly. It had been over an hour since Dolph made his way up to his room. He walked out of his bedroom and made his way to the backyard where everyone else was already gathered.

"Hey, cousin!" Dolph's older and much larger cousin Tony stood over him and pat his shoulder.

"Tony," The blonde chuckled.

"Have you talked to your boyfriend?" Dolph scowled up at his cousin, shaking his head.

"He's not my boyfriend, Tony."

"Really? You've been giving him googly eyes all afternoon!" They began to accumulate a few odd looks, one of those looks coming from Roman.

"Shut up, Tony," The big man laughed and draped his arm over his smaller cousin's shoulders.

"Don't act like you don't want him, Dolph!" Dolph huffed and pushed Tony away from him.

"Shut up!"

"Hey, now! Don't take it out on me because the only dick you've ever gotten didn't want yours anymore!" Dolph swung wildly, landing a punch right across Tony's face. Tony lunged for his cousin but was denied when the smaller man was pulled back.

"Dolph, stop," Roman whispered in the thrashing man's ear. Dolph ignored him and lunged for Tony again, who was now being restrained by another one of their cousin's.

"Let go of me!"

"Nic, stop, please," Roman whispered again and Dolph instantly went weak in his arms. Roman lifted him up and carried him into the house and up to his bedroom.

"Put me down," Roman heard the blonde grumbled. He did as he was told and watched as the man went and sat down on his bed.

"What was that about?"

"He pissed me off."

"So you hit him? Dolph that's not you…"

"You have no idea who I am, Roman," Dolph grumbled as he fell back onto his bed. "You called me Nic…" Roman nodded.

"I knew it was the only way to calm you down," They both looked out the window and watched as fireworks all around the city lit up the sky.

"No one calls me Nic. I don't allow people to call me Nic," Roman shrugged.

"I was always the only one," Dolph couldn't help but smile a bit.

"You still are."

"Listen, Dolph… I know that saying sorry won't fix anything, but I don't know what else I can do so that you know I am truly sorry for hurting you all those years ago," The blonde sighed and looked down.

"You have no idea how badly that hurt me, Roman. I gave up everything to you and in one weekend you threw it all away!"

"I fucked up that weekend Dolph," Dolph nodded as he bit down on his lip roughly.

"Damn right."

"But I loved you then and I still love you now…" The blonde looked up at the larger man slowly, staring into his dark eyes. The Samoan stepped closer to his former love.

"Roman, I-" He rose his hands and rested them on the smaller man's cheeks, rubbing soft circles with his thumbs.

"Tell me you don't love me and I'll stop right now," Dolph looked down at his feet, slowly attempting to blink away the tears in his blue eyes.

I wish I'd known how much you loved me

I wish I cared enough to know

I'm sorry every song's about you

The torture of small talk with someone you used to love

"Dolph?" He shook his head. "Look at me." The blonde raised his head and stared at Roman, his eyes glistening with the tears he couldn't fight off.

"I can't do it," Roman stepped closer, if that was possible. His cold breath hit Dolph's face and sent chills down his entire body.

"Can't do what?" He spoke in a whisper.

"I still love you, Ro," As soon as the words left Dolph's lips, Roman pressed their mouths together. It had been way too fucking long since they'd been together. After several minutes Dolph pulled away for some much needed air. He found his hands wrapped around the large hands resting on his face. He looked down again.

"I've waited so long for you to say that," Roman kissed Dolph's forehead as he regained his breath.

"Are you gonna break my heart again?" Dolph suddenly asked. Roman furrowed his eyebrows.

"Dolph, I-"

"Just tell me before I get myself in too deep again, Roman," Roman sighed and kissed the blonde's forehead again. Dolph looked up at him with soft eyes.

"I'm not gonna hurt you again, baby."

"Promise?" Dolph's voice cracked.

"Promise," Roman nodded before pressing their lips together again, stronger this time.
