A/N: just a romantic little ficlet because I love this song…
Disclaimer: sadly, I own nothing
Some day, when I'm
awfully low,
When the world is
cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
Mick watched as Beth stood out on his balcony, the breeze gently playing with her hair. He was holding the two glasses of wine in his hands, but somehow his feet wouldn't move. All he wanted was to stay there in that moment, watching her as she smoothed the folds of her dark blue dress. He'd invite her over for drinks, then dinner – just something to celebrate being human again. There was no gaurentee of how long he would stay that way…
"Mick?" Beth turned to face him, her voice shaking him out of his thoughts.
"Yeah," he said "Sorry. Here you go," he handed her a glass of red wine.
"To humanity," Beth said, raising her glass, "imperfect as it may be."
Mick toasted with her and couldn't help but smile. He never thought there would be a way for him to be with Beth. Not after everything that had happened between them, not after Josh. But here they were. Two humans, and definitely imperfect – but together. Maybe not in quite the way Mick wanted it to be, but he wasn't pushing anything. Just being here, tonight, was enough for him.
"I never thought this could happen," Mick remarked, leaning against the railing and looking out at the city lights.
"Never thought what could happen?"
"Me being happy," he replied, turning to face her, "I just never thought I would deserve it."
"And now?"
"I don't know if I deserve it, but I wouldn't trade it for anything."
Mick paused for a moment, wondering if what he was about to do would be a mistake. After all, he and Beth hadn't actually had any physical contact outside of a handshake or a hug since long before Josh died. Taking a deep breath, he ran his finger gently along the side of her face. Beth closed her eyes and smiled, then placed her hand on top of his.
"Kiss me," she said.
Mick stopped. He had Beth hadn't kissed since that night out by his car. Josh had only died two weeks ago…was this really a smart idea?
"Are you sure?" he asked, "We're only just normal again. Well, normal for us anyway."
Beth eyed him, "Do you want to?" she asked, taking a step closer to him.
"Yes," he replied quietly.
"Then for once, Mick St. John, do what you want to do, not what you think is honorable."
Putting a hand on his face, Beth drew their lips together. Mick could taste the wine on her lips and inside her mouth. He felt for a place to put his glass down and brought her closer to him, wrapping his hands around her waist. She smiled against his mouth and put her arms up around his neck. Everything, at that moment, felt right.
"You know," Beth said, breaking apart what could have been a moment or an hour later, "I don't think we're going to make it to dinner."
"You don't?"
She shook her head.
Mick couldn't help but smile. "So, why don't we go inside instead?"
"I like that idea."
Turning, they walked in side by side – wine glasses forgotten on the balcony.
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight…
