Title: Rebirth No. 3
This time would be different. He swore it.
You would think he would know better, but no: it took two more times before he learned.
Lesson one: don't become attached. If you do, it leads to pain.
Lesson two: interact as little as possible. Even if hostile, exchanges opened a window to something more. "Something more" could becomes attraction, and attraction was a distraction from purpose. Besides, attraction was another way of saying "attachment", and look at the results of past attachments. One: parents dead, sister in coma. Two: team dead. He left attachment three before he drew Death's notice again. His pain while leaving was just punishment for forgetting the lessons.
Survival was overrated, no matter what Yuushi said. Was the forty-seventh member of Oishi's band grateful for his youth? He doubted it, very much so.
When he was accidentally christened with her name he kept it, though the constant reminder of failure hurt each time he heard it. Why?
Because this time would be different. No attachments. No friendships. No attractions. No failure.
Only success. And if the gods smiled, death.
His hostility was his gift, even if they thought differently. It would keep them safe from him.
...end...

Oishi was the leader ofthe 47 ronin, a tale famous in both Japanese history and bushido. It's also a famous play called Chusingura. Read about them at http(colon)(slash)(slash)victorian(dot)fortunecity(dot)com(slash)duchamp(slash)410(slash)47ronin(dot)html
