Alice wakes to sunlight on her face. For those first confused seconds, she's back in the world before. When birdsong would accompany the newly birthed rays and she'd allow herself to lie, languid, for a few moments. It's been so long since she let herself do that, she's almost forgotten what it felt like and instinct starts to move her from the bed. But hand sliding across her bare midriff stops her, pushing her back to the mattress. And Alice smiles, brushing red hair away from the face of the last girl she'd ever expected would help her remember.
