The Man in my Life
There has always been only one man in my life.
When I was young, I remember he used to take me for walks in the park during summer. He read to me during the winter evenings, and we would talk by the fireside with Mother. We were all happy then.
When I grew up a little, I got some of the maids to try and teach me how to cook, so that I could make a dish for the man in my life. It didn't turn out too successfully, but I promised him that I would cook a full dinner for him one day when I became older.
Then business took him away from me. We moved to Japan to be closer to the Asian market, and he had to travel all over the region to handle affairs for his company.
Our house was big, but empty. The man in my life was rarely there.
When I became older, I decided to cook the meal I promised him. He had come back home night before, so it was a welcome-back dinner. After asking my friends, I decided on nikujaga over curry and went shopping for ingredients.
When I had finished shopping, it started to rain. In that rain, the man in my life appeared.
He told me he was leaving again. I watched him go as the melancholy rain drenched me and left me cold.
I had no more reason to keep going, so I just stood there in the rain, waiting for… waiting for a reason I didn't know. Waiting until an umbrella appeared over me and I looked up into a face I knew.
When one man went out of my life, a new man appeared.
The ingredients for the meal were spoiled, but there was no use for them anyway. Maybe one day I'll make curry instead.
