It was different this time, different from every time prior. She felt no joy in this place, neither tranquility nor anticipation. Her body was moving with fluidity and purpose, but her mind held nothing but stillness and silence.

In front of her was the well.

"You know this will destroy you." It was a strong but watery voice she knew in her very bones—a voice of contradictions; of kind sharpness, of loving reproach, of purity and power. "This will destroy us both".

Her expression was steel. She wanted life, not martyrdom. But if living meant the sacrifice of her loved ones, her precious people, and her pack? The alternative was unacceptable.

"So be it." The voice replied.

She stepped forward. In the physical world she shed resigned tears, and her arms began to rise. The enraged roar of a desperate youkai reverberated across the field, but she saw nothing, heard nothing. She climbed the edge of the well and turned. Her whispered confession was the only sound breaking the preternatural quiet.

She let the air in her lungs calmly expel, and Kagome fell.

(A/N: I've totally fallen in love with the Inuyasha fandom, mostly because of the fandom. The writing, originality, and most of all talent have drawn me in repeatedly. I hope with this story to do it justice. Would love to hear your thoughts on this teaser of a prologue-Jack)
