It's morning, you wake, a sunray hits your face
Smeared makeup as we lay in the wake of destruction
Hush baby, speak softly, tell me you're awfully sorry

They had never fought like this before. Sure they had had their disagreements but it had never been to this extent and they were easier to deal with when they weren't living together. Previously she had been able to run herself a bath while indulging in ice cream without the kicked puppy looks Mulder sent her way. Yet again, she had started the argument but she was starting to get concerned about the amount of hours he spent locked away in his 'office'. They had just recently deemed it safe enough for her to get a job and moving around freely as they worked out they were no longer amongst the FBI's most wanted.

But when he had starting growing out his beard, it was the final step. She had started her steps into what felt like normal civilisation when he seemed to be going back a couple of thousand years and several evolutions. It just escalated to the level neither of them expected, every single wound was reopened, salt added with a dash of lemon. Melissa, the trial, his mother, his insane beliefs, her strong religion, Ed Jerse and Diana Fowley. They had gotten to the level where she had broken several plates, each time getting closer and closer to his right ear, never blinking once even when they smashed off the wall and landed in his hair.

The last straw had been the mention of William, it had almost been 4 years since she had given him up and their conversations about him had been kept to a minimum outside of the first real conversation where she had confirmed that he had been Mulder's. The tears had burst; the anger had switched to hurt as he blamed her for not being able to protect him. She had stayed away from the topic of Samantha out of respect but he didn't seem to give it back to her.

The comments had carried on up the stairs where upon entering the bedroom she threw her hairbrush out of him, hitting him square in the face this time just to get him to silence. Scully hardly blinked when she noticed the cut that formed on his cheek and the blood that slowly seeped out of it, her doctor mode permanently switched off for the time being.

They had finally fallen asleep on either side of the bed, both of them still dressed the same way, neither of them bothered with the nightly ritual which 99% of the time included a joint shower.

The sunlight was blinding to her sensitive eyes when her alarm went off the next morning, she could feel how scratchy they were from the dried tears that covered her lashes, mixed in with yesterday's mascara and eyeliner.

Rolling over, she looked at Mulder who seemed like he had hardly slept a wink the night before.

"I'm sorry." She whispered softly, tenderly her hand crossed the distance between them to touch his arm.

"I'm sorry too." His eyes finally connected to hers, she couldn't help the faintest smile that formed on her lips as he pulled her body to his own. No more words were needed as he buried his face into her hair and her hand went to the space over his heart. ㈲
