.The lonely night.

"It's not your fault."

Those words rang through the bitter night air. Snape ignored them like he had the others, sitting on the ledge of the roof his cowl off to his right side allowing his black locks to be free. He had gotten so used to people trying to speak to him, trying to get the 'hero' out of the rut he was stuck in.

Funny. How could he call himself a hero? He let a person who looked up to him, a person who trusted him, die

All because he was to late to stop the young and stubborn Robin fall from the nest, too late to stop the evil that would snap his wings to early, too late to save Draco.

Snape sighed before he looked up to see who the voice belonged to.

It was Potter. The boy who used to be his protégé as Robin, the boy who had grown up and flew from the nest to take on his own persona, Nightwing.

The last time he had seen Potter, who was now a grown man, had been when he had introduced him to his new partner, Draco.

Potter had been skeptical of the new Robin, with his attitude problem and all, but Harry had given Draco a chance and that was all the younger boy needed. A single chance.

"I should have been quicker," Snape finally responded after what seemed like a lifetime of silence, his voice as dark as the night sky above. "I should have taught him better."

Potter listened, taking a seat next to his long time teacher. He knew Snape blamed himself for Malfoy's impulsive actions, but it was no one's fault.

Malfoy had been manipulated by his own thoughts and feelings to go into that warehouse without help. Draco had for once thought with his heart instead of his head, and that had costed him his life.

"He was the one who fell for the trap, it wasn't your fault, Snape," Harry tried to get through to his master, his father figure.

Snape had adopted Harry when the gang leader known as Lord Voldemort had murdered his parents after they had fallen short on a couple of payments. If it hadn't been for Snape breaking into the Potter's home and saving him from Voldemort, he would've be killed too.

"But if I had just been better," Snape growled back, but his rage wasn't directed at Harry. He was angry at himself, angry that he, the legendary 'Batman', couldn't save one person.

"Snape, you need to accept that it happened, mistakes were made, but if you dwell on those mistakes you can never get better," Harry looked out to the horizon, watching the stars twinkle and shine in the pitch black sky.

Snape took a second to look at the boy, letting his words sink in. Maybe Potter was correct, maybe it was time to stop dwelling on his mistakes and start preparing for the future.

No words were spoken between the two for the rest of the night. They just sat there, in each other's company.
