The valley's the valley of green, the Career thinks. It isn't the Valley of the Shadow yet. He hopes that it will stay the valley of green, even though that with victory is an oxymoron.

There's that girl from the lower districts and ages, and the Career is interested in her. It's probably infatuation, but he convinces himself that it's love and that in another life he might as well get married to her (Eighteen and twelve isn't that big of a gap, is it?). The feeling's beginning to slack, but Career isn't humble and won't admit that he's wrong.
The girl is hiding in the valley of green, isn't she? The Career finds it on his map. He will visit her tonight and see how close she is to the lair of the mutt.
iii.
The climb is quite difficult, because every shadow that the Career sees might be another tribute, or maybe some sort of mutt. And of course, it might be his own kindred trying to find his whims or the ghost of his innocence that is in the valley of the shadow and the green. It takes about an hour for him to go half an hour.
Finally, he's at the nook of the Valley of the Green and his map flashes quietly and dimly. The mutt's lair right there, and he can see it if he climbs the tree next to him and puts on his night vision goggles. It's not the mutt he worries about though, because he is armed with his sword and years of training, and he has his rope to draw and quarter too.
No, he's thinking of someone else.
The Career wonders what to do. Maybe he should carry the girl to a safe house. Or he can kill the mutt before it comes out. Or maybe, he could beg the Capitol for help…But that's just a half-hearted fancy.
The Career checks his digital map. The mutt is coming out, and he doesn't have enough time or guts to run and pick up the girl. There may be just enough time to warn her though.
iv.
He finds the girl after five minutes. She is sleeping so calmly and serenely, like those creatures they used to talk about back home (angels?)
There are stirrings in the lair of the mutt. It is coming out for brunch.
Time is short, and the Career is fast. He goes ahead and runs up to her.
"Don't panick," he tells her. "I'll only mutilate you."
v.
The girl does panic and she panicks more than a normal person should. She wakes up with a start, and finds herself staring eye to eye at her greatest rival. There would be a scream, but it is quickly muffled by the sharp tip of metal. Her vocal cords are gone forever.
The Career smiles at the camera with a social smile, as if to say, "I'm putting a good show for you." His guard never leaves the girl.
A second later, he has sculpted her whole face, and it's no longer a face, but a mixture of flesh. She's still alive though, and the Career wants her to leave for heaven. He takes a drop of poison and spreads it over the mess and it burns it all away. Next is the heart. It goes faster. The cannon belches.
Now it is time for dismember: first it is the right arm, then the two legs, then the left arm. Gently, the Career twists them into a lovely braid and weaves the fingers in unison with the black hair. The liver is next, and it becomes a teddy bear for the girl. After that, the Career carefully peels off a few layers of skin. It's difficult, for the skin is so easy to tear, and it is so soaked, but he manages and puts it as a blanket over the corpse.
He is about to close her eyes forever, but the mutt has found its target and the cannon rings out once more. The smile doesn't die with him, and it thanks fate that the end is at his hands and not at the hell the mutt's jaws offer.
