Pippin barely had time to realize what was happening before he was on his back.
"Merry?"
Merry was busy stuffing mushrooms into a bag.
Pippin could hear dogs barking, getting closer.
"You've been in Farmer Maggot's field again, haven't you?"
Merry was too frantic to reply.
"Where are ye', ye' little brat! I'll teach you to steal my mushrooms!"
"Give me the bag, Mer."
"What?"
"Just give me the bag and hide, quick! He won't harm me."
Merry dashed behind a clump of bushes. Pippin picked up the bag and grabbed a mushroom just as Farmer Maggot ran into the clearing.
Pippin looked up at Farmer Maggot with pleading eyes and handed him the bag of mushrooms.
"I'm sorry. I won't ever do it again."
Farmer Maggot fixed him with a glare, "Ye'd better not, or I'll let my dogs deal with ye'. Now be off with ye'."
"Yes, sir."
Farmer Maggot stomped away and Merry crept out of the bushes.
"Why'd you do that?"
"Because you're my cousin, and more importantly, because you're my best friend."
"Thanks, Pip."
