Chapter 1

Thalia Black sat alone in her bedroom, watching the snow fall in white sheets outside. It had been two months since Sirius, her husband, had been taken to Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit. Lily and James died, leaving her one-year-old baby Harry. She managed to talk Dumbledore into letting her raise him, since Lily and her had such a strong bond.

Harry's soft cry broke her away from her thoughts. "Sh, Harry," she says soothingly. When he didn't quiet, she begins to sing:

One thousand years ago this story starts
There were four sorcerers with strong and wise hearts
Bold Gryffindor from Wild Moor
Fair Ravenclaw from Glen
Sweet Hufflepuff from Valley Broad
Shrewd Slytherin from fen

They had a dream to teach all that they knew
Witches and wizards came far and it grew
'Til a castle stood tall, by the shores of a lake
And a thousand years later, the magic remains

Brave Godric Gryffindor favoured the strong

But Salazar Slytherin had his own plans
He thought the muggle-borns didn't understand
The subtleties of magic and so he devised
The chamber of secrets with monster inside

Harry's eyes flutter shut. Thalia smiles and gets up, careful not to disturb him. She walks to the Gryffindor-Themed nursery next door to her room and lays him in the wooden crib that she painted red with gold and scarlet-striped sheets. Thalia gives him a kiss on the head and walks to her own bed and lays down to go to sleep.
