Prologue
For every happy ending in the world there is a lesser ending, something less than a perfect happily ever after. If there wasn't there wouldn't be any stories left to tell. Intellectually the concept isn't hard to grasp, but emotionally it's devastating.
Growing up in foster care does not lead one to imagine a happy ending, but ever since the night Henry showed up on my Boston doorstep telling me that he was the son I had given up so long ago I've been hoping for something I've always considered impossible, Happily Ever After.
For all of my scorn and expressions of disbelief every time Henry tells me that there is a curse upon the town that only I can break, I yearn to believe him because it means that my parents didn't abandon me, they lost me by loving me enough to protect me even though it meant letting me go. It means I may not be as undeserving as I thought I was when I signed the papers to give up the right to know my son.
But as a counter point to this kernel of hope that is growing inside me, there is a very real obstacle in my path. One Regina Mills, Mayor of Storybrook, Henry's adoptive Mother and alleged Evil Sorceress and Queen; even without believing in magic I can see her destroying people in order to have things her way, she tried to run me out of town simply because Henry found me, after all.
But I'm finding that I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything. Given the chance I wouldn't change recent events, because they lead me here to this moment, to these people, and if Henry is right recent events lead me home.
Author's Note – If you've read this far you've seen something you like so thank you. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I'm going to end up switching between points of view. I want to say that 80-90% of the story will be in 3rd person but there will be chapters thrown in that are written in 1st person because I think Emma has some growing to do, more than the show has gotten to so far. Also I'm going to apologize in advance for characters that end up being AU / OOC. For those who have seen all the current episodes you'll notice differences first. Title is loosely based off part of a song called My Story by Addison Road, it was the 3rd result that popped up when I did a search looking for a song earlier.
