Vin sat in her overstuffed chair in the conference room, legs tucked beneath her, trying to study Marsh out of the corner of her eye.
He looked so much like Kelsier. He was just . . . stern. He wasn't angry, nor was he grumpy like Clubs. He just wasn't happy. He sat on his chair, a neutral expression on his face.
The others had all arrived except for Kelsier, and they were chatting quietly amongst themselves. Vin caught Lestibourne's eye and waved him over. The teenage boy approached and crouched beside her chair.
"Marsh," Vin whispered beneath the general hum of the room. "is that a nickname?"
"notting without the call of his parents."
Vin paused, trying to decipher the boys eastern dialect. "not a nickname, then?"
Lestibournes shook his head. "he wasing one though."
"what was it?"
"Ironeyes. Others stopped using it. Too calling close to an iron in the real eyes, eh? Inquisitor."
Vin glanced at Marsh again. His expression was hard, his eyes unwavering, almost like they were made of iron. She could see why people would stop using the nickname; even referring to a Steel Inquisitor made her shiver.
"thanks."
Lestibournes smiled. He was an earnest boy. Strange, intense, and jumpy-but earnest. He retreated to his stool as Kelsier finally arrived.
"all right, crew," he said. "what…
Right as he began to speak again, he was interrupted by a brilliant flash of light. Vin scampered out of her chair and ducked behind it. She couldn't see a thing, eyes blinded by the sudden light, and her entire body seemed to be shaking with some unrecognizable force. 'Inquisitors' she thought. 'I should have known they'd find us, it was just a matter of time. You cant escape the Lord Ruler!' as panic set in, Vin's senses seemed to return. Her vision cleared and the trembling seemed to reside, although she still felt a faint pressure in the room, a residue of whatever had just happened. Frantically searching the room for the danger she knew should be there, Vin's eye's finally fell upon a figure in the middle of the room. It was… a girl? What? Vin's mind spun with confusion. This wasn't right. The girl looked to be about Vin's own age, perhaps younger. She was of a slight build, but taller than Vin, with long blonde hair and the fairest skin Vin had ever seen, even on a noble. The most astonishing part about her, however, was her expression. She didn't look like she wanted to hurt anyone, or even if she could if she wanted to. In fact she looked confused… looks could be deceiving though, maybe she just wanted to look weak. It was a strategy Vin had used many times, living in the streets. Vin skulked to the back of the room, not believing that this person was safe.
"please, where am I?" the girl spoke.
