Safe in His Arms
By YinSteve
Gracia was nervous. It was the day every girl dreamed about at one point or another: her wedding day. She stood behind the closed double doors that led to the sanctuary, her father standing next to her, and waited for the bridal processional to start.
"Nervous, sweetie?" her father asked. She nodded, her mouth slightly dry from the anticipation. He chuckled softly. "Don't worry about it too much; it's only natural to be like that. If anything, the groom out there is far more nervous than you are if he's anything like I was when I married your mother."
At that moment the music started and the doors opened, causing any further conversation to be put on hold. Gracia felt her father squeeze her hand in reassurance as they made their way down the aisle. In what seemed like an eternity to her, they finally made it to the altar and her father left for his seat next to her mother. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the joining," the priest started, but his words seemed unimportant to her at the moment as she looked at the man directly in front of her.
He was tall and black-haired, and handsome in her eyes at the very least. What got her most, though, were his eyes; hazel and behind a pair of rectangular glasses, they just seemed to radiate a love and affection that no one else could ever give. She could lose herself forever in those eyes, that warmth of unbridled devotion and affection. "I do," she heard him say and it snapped her attention back to the priest in front of them both.
"And do you, Gracia Miller, take Mäes Hughes to be your lawfully wedded husband, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
The words came without hesitation, practiced before, but for the first time having sustenance and meaning. "I do," she said.
"Then by the powers invested in me," continued the priest, "I hereby declare you husband and wife. Ladies and gentleman, I am pleased to be the first to announce Mr. and Mrs. Mäes Hughes. You may now kiss the bride."
With that statement, Gracia found herself a part of what some may argue to be one of the most passionate kisses the world has ever known as a warm, tingling sensation seemed to spread from her lips down to the very tips of her toes. With her new husband's arms around her, she felt the safest she ever had in her entire life, feeling as if nothing wrong could ever happen to her as long as she had him there with her and his arms were entwined around her.

The flow of time never ceases and four years had come and gone. It had now been three months since Mäes had died. Life had returned to something resembling normalcy and to the casual observer Gracia appeared to be taking the death of her husband well. Truth be told, she was. Somehow she knew that he wouldn't have wanted her to become an emotional wreck because of him. As she watched Elysia draw chalk pictures on the driveway, she couldn't help but feel like she did way back on her wedding day. Even though he wasn't physically there anymore, she felt a familiar warmth spread throughout her entire body and in the back of her mind knew that wherever he was, he was still watching over them and held her safely in his arms.
