Maya sat grumbling to herself on the bench in the defendant's lobby. There were bags under her eyes and her cheeks were quite clearly stained by tears.
"If only I'd..." she started to say to herself. She stopped when a dark silhouette appeared in front of her, and straightened up.
"If only you'd what?" the figure asked, and Maya recognised it at once to be Miles Edgeworth.
"O-oh, never mind," she giggled suddenly, turning red.
"Ms Fey," Edgeworth said, taking a seat beside her. "You didn't look your usual chirpy self in court today. Is something the matter?"
"No," she replied abruptly.
"Very well," Edgeworth replied. "If you do want to talk, I'm here to listen,"
Maya sighed. Only 10 minutes and they'd be back in the courtroom again, she might as well get this over and done with.
"Mr Edgeworth, I was seeing a friend of yours," she started somewhat awkwardly.
"Wright?" Edgeworth asked, somewhat taken aback.
"No, of course not. Nick and I are just friends," Maya said, shaking her head.
"Who was it then?" Edgeworth raised an eyebrow.
"Larry Butz,"
"You what?"
"He left me, and I'd believed him when he said I was the one this time," she whispered. Cold tears began to run down her cheeks. Something interrupted their flow. Something warm.
She innocently opened her eyes and turned them to see something she hadn't expected.
"Mr Edgeworth?" she asked. "Are you kissing my cheek?"
"Yes," he said. "I'm sorry. Is there some problem? Would you prefer I stopped?"
"Not at all," Maya said, smiling for the first time in a few days. "Except that..."
She was interrupted by his lips pressing against hers.
"Except that this?" he groaned.
"Yeah," she mumbled and kissed him back.
"Erm, Edgeworth? Maya? Court's reconvening no-" Phoenix said, then trailed off. "What are you two doing?"
They broke apart and looked at him. Maya was blushing, Edgeworth looked unphased.
"Wright?" he said.
"I-I'll erm... see you two i-in the courtroom," Phoenix mumbled, then rushed off. The couple on the bench laughed.
"I hope that cheered you up, Ms Fey," Edgeworth smiled. "And I hope you'll agree that there are much better men out there than Butz,"
"Of course, Mr Edgeworth-Miles," she grinned in reply, and winked.
"Now I think we should be getting back," he told her. "We've got a crime to solve,"
