His father beat him ragged.
He'd not be able to go to school after a hard one. But then no one noticed. Figured he was just taking a break to go with what ever girl he was with. They didn't think such a funny nice guy could ever have anything that wasn't shiny around him.
His parents seemed to have this perfect relationship. All his friends said so.
They didn't see her, drunk and screaming, then his father slapping her.
They didn't see the broken plates.
He knew once he held his son that it would all be different.
That he would never ever hurt his son like he was hurt. He would look at the world and not see the evil in people's hearts. He would know that there was a difference between a father's anger and what a punishment was.
He would grow up with the world at his feet, and able to concur it no matter what.
And if you asked him, no matter what else he had done, he knew without a shadow of a doubt what he would answer.
Aaron Echolls was a good father.
