Shelagh made one last sweep of the ward before turning to leave the smoke filled room. Just as she was about to close the door she heard a sound, just barely audible over the alarm. A child was crying somewhere.

'Hello? Is anyone there? It's okay you're safe. I'm here. Are you okay?'

'Sister Bernadette? I'm sorry. Sister I'm so scared.'

'There's no need to be scared. Where are you sweetie? What's your name?'

'Ivy. I was visiting my Mummy and I ran off and hid. Daddy has no time for me since Tommy was born and now there's a new baby so he'll love me even less now. He doesn't want me. He didn't even notice I'd gone! He's not my real Daddy. My real daddy died in a fire just like this one. Everyone would just be better off if I was gone so-' Realisation dawned on Shelagh as an iron fist closed around her stomach.

'Ivy did you start the fire? It's okay if you did.' A sob and a thump sounded from the cupboard to her left. She raced over to it and saw a for of about 9 curled up in the bottom of it crying. Shelagh pulled her into her arms, increasingly aware of the fire growing ever close to the room they were in. 'Come on Ivy.' The child shook her head fiercely.

'I'm so sorry Sister Bernadette. I just wanted to be with my Daddy again and I thought if I died in a fire then I'd have a better chance of finding him. I want my daddy! But I'm scared. I want my Daddy Sister. Why did he have to die? I'm so sorry Sister this is all my fault.'

'Oh darling. I'm sure your new Daddy and your Mummy love you very much. They'd be heartbroken if something happened to you. You will see your Daddy again some day when you go to heaven but today is not that day okay? God's plan for you doesn't end here and now. Please come with me Ivy.'

'Okay.' She whispered nodding gently.

'Good girl. Can you walk? Good.' They walked out of the room hand in hand. They were only just out of the room when Ivy suddenly shouted out.

'Barney! I left my teddy in there! He doesn't like fire!'

'I'll just go get him then, he'll be fine. Go on with you.' Shelagh watched as the girl ran between the pillars of flames that now filled most of the surgery. Turning back to the room Shelagh stopped short as a strange noise rang from the ceiling. She looked up just in time to see the ceiling caving in and a beam and rubble fall towards her before everything went black.
