Beneath the Sakura Tree
One month. Just one month? It felt like so much longer. It felt like years. Years without that smiling face. Years without that soft voice. Years without love.
The sun was pale as the morning drew on. The rain had finally succumbed to a light drizzle. The atmosphere was still thick with grief. A month it had been this way. A month... Seems like a very short time to you or I but to them, it was far, far longer. Many wished their lives had ended instead. Most were glad it was over, they couldn't bare to see the suffering continue any longer.
The peace which surrounded the sakura tree was astounding. It seemed the only place the rain couldn't taint. The only place where there was harmony. Many visited this spot to clear themselves of unwanted emotions, pay their respects, or just sit and talk or listen. They would sit beneath the blossoms and listen to the soft whistling which seemed to come from nowhere.
He sat there most of his day, staring up at the grey sky. No-one had seen him leave the barracks since that time a month ago. He spent most of his time beneath the sakura tree with him. Sitting behind him, watching him cry over the mount of dirt and the small wooden cross. His ghostly hands would occasionally brush his skin. He would look round, half-expecting to see him smiling at him but there was never anything there. He smiled as he watched him write his usual strange poems, always about himnow...
"Souji." Hijikata whispered to the grave. "I love you."
