Tales of Pokemon

(I'm starting a new project dealing with one shot Pokemon stories. Please don't bother me on other projects or you will never get any updates. I'm going to make one of these whenever I feel like it. They won't be very long and I'm not going to come back to a story once I finish it, unless I think there's another story to tell with it. Don't expect sequels to them. I may use the same Pokemon twice though.)

-Sableye-

No. 302: Darkness Pokemon

Sableye lead quiet lives deep inside caverns. They are feared, however, because these Pokemon are thought to steal the spirits of people when their eyes burn with a sinister glow in the darkness.

23rd, August

I cannot tell you how much I miss my bed. It's been over three weeks since I set out from Petalburg City on this expedition into the unknown. I receive letters from home. From my wife and two young bogs ages 7 and 3. I guess that's the hardest part. They don't really warn you how much you miss your old life.. They don't tell you that you'll be making home in the dark of a cave. They don't tell you much of anything. By they, I'm referring to science. Our fascination with the world and our eager to know has always baffled and intrigued me. Why do we care why things are the way they are? What purpose does it serve? The world functioned well without our knowledge. I shouldn't say much more. I am, after all, here because of science. It's not like I didn't want to go and learn more about our region. Quite the opposite. But I have always been fascinated with the idea of knowledge. I thought I'd share that. Just a bit of proof that sitting in the dark of the cave makes your mind wander. I also believe that my eyes are playing tricks on me. Yesterday evening, I swore that I saw two glimmering gems in the darkness. They sparkled and were entrancing. Upon further investigation, I found nothing. It's only for three more weeks.

I've decided to begin a new set of observations. My original expedition was to catalog the various gems and stones in the cave but I discovered that a new passion has entranced me. I've decided to call it Shadow because that's what it looks like. At first, it would frighten me and still does. But it seems to fear me more than I it. Shadow seems to be all black and darts from wall to wall. I've tried to sketch it, but to no avail. I will say this. One day, I attempted to leave the cave for much needed sunlight and some observations on the local population of Wingull and Electrike, given the coastal area. I also observed some Wailmers that appeared to be sunning not too far from shore. I remember the Wingull tearing apart some sort of shellfish, making their loud cries and disturbing my relaxation in the sun. But I took this as a chance to observe that no other creature goes into the cave. They don't even come close to it. It's as if whatever Shadow is…scares them. I remember before returning to the cave, a pair of Electrike looked up at me strangely as I approached the cave. I couldn't tell if they were nervous of me or nervous of my current location.

Five days have passed since my last entry. I apologize for that. But after five days of observation, I've concluded that whatever Shadow is…he's not friendly nor is he a living creature. I've observed that he never leaves the cave. I refer to it as a he because Shadow appears to have the shape of a small human male. I've tried to capture the anomaly several times, only to fail every time. I actually stayed outside the cave for two nights to see if the creature would come out. I put a net up and…it was unharmed and untouched. I'm beginning to think it's all in my head. This Shadow. I've made sure that I can see around my camp by using several lamps and candles to illuminate my site. Shadow can still be seen…out in the darkness. He just watches me with those glowing white eyes.

2nd, September

I won't let it get the better of me. I'm going to find out exactly what this thing is. I've heard it utter a name. Sableye. This horrifying creature is stalking me and waiting for a chance to strike. I caught it one morning, after the candles just about went out. It is not black as I previously thought. It's purple. A very dark colour of purple. And it looks almost like some sort of animal with strange ear-like appendages on top of its head. It also has gems on its back, like spikes. It appears to have fur or is at least furry in some sense. But I observed it doing something that I still can't believe. I had collected several rare and precious stones; rubies, sapphires, diamonds, and other stones and gems. I then returned to my site to find this creature 'feeding' on these gems. For the longest time I was sure that this creature had no mouth. That it was simply an entity of the darkness. A demon of the mind. But this showed me something alive about this creature. This Sableye. It eats and therefore seemed more alive. I decided to draw closer to the creature and which point it noticed me. Its ears perked up and its gaze turned to me. I'll never forget that stare. That lifeless gaze of the gems it had for eyes. It then smiled at me with the most frightening grin and slowly crawled on all fours back into the darkness. I decided it would be better if I slept outside tonight and I've been doing so ever since. I'm not going back in that cave again. Not for anything.

4th, September

I've noticed that I'm growing very ill. These past two days have left me very weak and unable to do much except lay and write. The pokemon that were around have left the area. The last one I saw, a mother Mightyena with her two pups, looked at me strangely before shuffling her pups far from me. When I tried to approach, she growled and I knew it was best to keep my distance. Last night, I heard whispers coming from the cave. I sleep near the entrance so that my boat, which will be arriving in nine days, can find me easily. I wish I could leave now. I believe I'm loosing my mind and the cave is the culprit. The cave and the Sableye.

5th, September

I was awoken last night by something tugging on my ankle and dragging me back into the cave. My supplies were left outside as I was being dragged by something unknown through the darkness. I screamed. I prayed. I cried. I was sure that with every forceful drag. With every sharp stone slicing my body, I was confident that I would never see my wife or children ever again. When the light from the tunnel vanished, I saw my old life vanish as well. There was nothing but darkness. Darkness and whispers. I shut my eyes because everywhere I looked I saw those grins and the eyes. Like they were laughing at me. I was eventually released from the grip and tug of my assailant and I fumbled around in the darkness. I then recognized something familiar. A candle. It was at this moment I realized that I had been dragged back to the site where I was originally. I fumbled my pockets for the matches and I found the box. I grabbed the candle and struck the match and lit the candle. I remember staring at the flame for a good amount of time. I then proceeded to try and find my way out of the cave. It felt like years went by before I finally saw that familiar light. The sun was well risen at that point. I then knew, after escaping the cave, that I had to go back in and stop this creature. Understand what it was trying to do. I had to face my fears and conquer them. Whatever the cost. I had to know what Sableye wanted.

Day

I no longer know what day it is. Yesterday, the entrance to the cave collapsed. The last day I recall it being was September the eighth. I've been writing in another journal, chronicling my discoveries and what I believe to be Sableye's purpose. That journal is now missing and I cannot find it. I had been writing in it for the last 3 days. For some reason, this is the only journal I have even though I had many others. They are al missing. I no longer know what day it is. Day 4

Only one more day

Day 5

I can't keep doing this. Their grins. Their grins. Their grins. I gotta get their eyes. Kill them all. I gotta kill them all. HahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

(indecipherable numbers and letters)

30 days past September. 30 days past September. 30 days past September. I'm not going to let them win. They can't take me. They can't take my soul. They can't take me. I'll kill them all. Kill them all. It's been 30 days past September.

23rd, August

To my loving wife, Emilia, you are the most beautiful person I've ever known. I'm sorry I'm not there right now. But I'll be back someday. I'll pick you the biggest and most beautiful stone.

To my sons, Charles and Jason, someday you too will leave your house and your wives and sons to travel and explore this big bright beautiful world. On that day, you must never forget them. You have to make it your goal to get back to them. Never forget who you are and never let the world take you away.

The front door shook with the forceful knocking. It was the usual three raps. But Emilia wasn't fooled for a second by it. She knew what the urgency and the forceful knocks entailed. She was in no hurry to get to the door. But manners were manners. She put down the pot she was washing and walked slowly to the door, wiping the soapy water off onto the apron she was wearing. Her hair was brunet and tied into a bun on top of her head. Henry likes it, she would tell the prodigious members of the Pokemon Club. The Growlithe was already at the front door and began barking.

"Simon! Go lay down," she snapped. She turned the doorknob and pulled the door open. A man in a bowler hat stood in front of her, carrying what looked like a book under his arms and an umbrella over his head.

"Good day, Mrs. Castler, do you mind if I come in? It's a little wet out here," said the man. The man, happened to be Verdict Hamptem, a very high ranking scientist and researcher. He was the one who gave Henry the chance to go to Granite Cave and study. But the look he wore was not the same he had nearly two months ago when he came calling on Henry. He was more somber in his speech and a grim cloud hung over him and his bushy mustache. He grunted and cleared his throat.

"Oh, by all means. Please do come in, Mr. Hamptem. I will be honored to take your coat and luggage. Can I please make you a cup of tea?"

"I believe with such a visit as this a nice Brandy would do quite nicely and perhaps you should pour one for yourself there, madam," said Mr. Hamptem. "And I'll be keeping my coat. I shan't be staying too long. Not when there's so much to do."

Before long they were both in the living room, each with a glass in their hands. Mr. Hamptem's was mostly gone by the time Emilia sat down.

"Mrs. Castler, I'm afraid I must be frank. Your husband is quite unhinged," said Hamptem.

"Whatever do you mean, sir?" Emilia asked.

"I guess I should be less frank, then. I sometimes forget that you are not quite so illiterate. Begging your pardons, ma'am. As you know, your husband has been away on his trip for a little over a month now. He was scheduled to return two weeks ago now and well…he didn't," said Hamptem.

"Yes sir, I am aware of this," said Emilia, trying not to offend but also trying not to sound completely stupid.

"We later sent a rescue party to search for Mr. Castler. We searched near and all over Dewford Island and found nothing. We later checked the cave and we found him in the dark, rocking back and forth. He was laughing and every once in a while he would point to the darkness and say something about grins and creatures. We checked the cave and only found common creatures such as Zubats and Geodudes. It was our conclusion that your husband was bitten by a Zubat and badly poisoned. We found marks all over his body, however no such indication of Zubat poison. Once we removed him from the cave, we learned that he became completely unresponsive. And, shortly before arriving here in Petalburg, he perished. He took his own life with a letter opener. I then looked at the only object that was clutched in Mr. Castler's hands when we found him," Mr. Hamptem stopped and pulled out the book. "This journal."

He gave it to Emilia, who was shocked by this tale and held back tears.

"Mrs. Castler…I am terribly sorry."

"It's quite alright…I'm sorry. It was not proper. It's anything far from alright. I don't know courtesy for death news," said Emilia. Hamptem smiled.

"I wish there were one, my dear," said Hamptem. He tipped his hat and walked out the door.

Emilia looked down at the journal and noticed something in the book. Some sort of lump. She opened the book to the first page and saw a very large white diamond the size of half the page wedged into the book. She pulled it out and looked into the beautiful gem stone. She held it up to her eye and looked around the room. First to the left and then to the right.

And she saw it. Crawling down the wall, a purple creature with gemstones for eyes and an evil grin looked straight at her. She gasped and dropped the stone. She picked it up and looked there again and saw nothing.

Emilia Castler currently lives in the Unova Region in Nimbassa City. Her sons have gone on to be geologists. She later went to Granite Cave during the creation of Dewford Town and captured a Sableye. She claims that it had been haunting her for 15 years. She is now 86 and treasures her Sableye very much. She says that it is her husband.
