A Husband's Intuition

Based on the 2009 BBC Emma Adaptation

Part of the Austen Marriages Series

I see the vision of my wife pass the sitting room where I am engaged in penning a letter, her steps somewhat hurried. She has made the same circuit of rooms since breakfast. Her manner isn't agitated but any observer can sense a growing restlessness as if something preys on her mind.

It would have been puzzling had I not years of experience in discerning her moods and reasoning.

I witnessed her gazing out the window overlooking Donwell's summer garden in passing, a destination always within her current path. At breakfast, she had taken greater care in spreading preserves on her toast.

The cause of her actions did require deciphering but I believe my conclusion correct. Assured of this, I already made an earlier visit to the kitchens with my request on Emma's behalf- the result of which had only now been brought to me. I will wait for her to complete her next turn before presenting her with my gift.

It will be perceived as an indulgence. It is a rather unconventional time to indulge...but I can't be bothered with convention. Emma is well worth any talk among the household staff.

She approaches again and, leaving behind inkwell and pen, I meet her in the hall. I clear my throat gently. Her slippers pause. She offers a smile while reaching for my arm. She looks at me in question, seeing the secret in my gaze.

"Come."

Her full attention is mine as I slowly step back, affording her a view of the two glasses resting on a sideboard. She gasps.

I chuckle as, like a child on Christmas morning, she scurries over to the waiting treats.

"Strawberry ices!"

Her joy increases my mirth and, still chuckling, I accept her enthusiastic embrace. "Oh thank you my love...but I didn't say...how did you..."

I silence her ramblings by placing a kiss on her brow. "A husband's intuition my beloved Emma."
