In a moment like this, there was really only one person in the world Amelia Shepherd could talk to.

"Hi, you've reached the Montgomery-Reilly's! We're not home right now, but leave a message and we'll get back to you!"

God, Addison sounded so happy. Good for her, if anyone deserved it, it was the woman who had always more of a big sister than –in-law.

"Hey, Addison. It's Amelia. I know we haven't talked in a while..."

She didn't really know where to go from there. The words at the tip of her tongue didn't seem like enough but she knew if she let loose all the words floating in her head that would be too much. So, she stuck with providing minimal details over something as impersonal as voicemail.

"... but I could really use you Addie so if you have a minute, give me a call? ... Bye."

Her voice broke.

"Oh and tell Henry and Jake I say 'love you.'"

Clicking end, Amelia paused and took a deep breath before exiting the on-call room. She had to shed her ex-addict, widowed girlfriend, mom-for-a-minute face and replace it with her brilliant, kick-ass neurosurgeon persona before she faced the halls of Seattle Grace. Most especially, before she faced her fiancé.

Speak of the handsome devil.

"Hey Meel."

He gave her a quick peck on the lips. Work appropriate, of course. Upon their reconciliation, she'd made it clear they needed to be stricter with their personal-professional boundaries. Owen had done a good job of respecting that. He was still a little iffy with the workplace PDA though.

"Hey."

Amelia didn't really feel like talking. She just needed to be alone. Alone, so she had space to contemplate how the universe could be so cruel to deal her this hand. To deliver her a man who was absolutely perfect for her, after she had done absolutely nothing right in her life. And then this.

"You ok, babe?"

"Yeah, just got a jam-packed afternoon. Too many consults, not enough time."

"Awwwww, well how bout I make it up to you tonight?"

Lately, Owen's mind had been on one thing. Baby-making.

Were she any other woman in the universe whose fiancé had been the one to initiate the discussion about trying to get pregnant, she would have been appreciative. Ecstatic even. She'd heard of all the women who were way more eager than their partners to get pregnant and were met with less than enthusiastic responses when they tried to broach the subject. She should be happy. But she wasn't... and with good reason.

"We'll see, O. All of our practice has been wearing me down. I'm exhausted."

Owen's expression turned quickly from a grin to confusion back to a grin. He brushed back a stray piece of Amelia's hair and bent down slightly so his ear was right above hers.

"I'm sure I can come up with a thing or two that will wake you right up."

In spite of the sadness that had made residence in her chest over the past few days and the uncertainty that riddled her every thought, Amelia couldn't help but laugh like a giddy schoolgirl.

Amelia Shepherd wasn't a cheery, carefree woman by any means, but somehow her boyfriend knew exactly what to do to bring out whatever small amount of light existed inside her. When she was with him, she couldn't help but feel that everything would turn out okay. That was before this though. She knew she that even though she wasn't a trusting person by nature, she needed to trust him now. That was harder than ever before though, because she wasn't sure their relationship could survive this. She doubted that the love she and Owen Hunt shared would withstand this storm.
