Long ago, in the fourteenth year of Meji, before Kenshin Himura and Kaoru Kamiya had met, the man known as Kenshin was renting a room in a small inn for the light with what little money he had left. Kenshin, while sitting at his table, sipping tea, was thinking about all the lives he had taken.
There had been countless men he had killed in the Bakumatsu. His mind was also drawn to one girl in particular-his ex-wife Tomoe, whom he had accidentally murdered with his own sword when she leaped between him and his opponent. While thinking about all the blood he had spilt, Kenshin thought about taking his own life. He knew he had to atone for the sin of killing so many people some way. So, after he finished his tea, he picked up his sakabatou, and almost turned it over for the final blow.
Almost.
"No! Stop!
Kenshin looked up toward where he heard the yell, and to his surprise, it was a girl with short black hair wearing a pink yukata. She was climbing through the window, and finally managed to pull herself into Kenshin's room and sit next to him. "Sir, you were about to kill yourself just now, weren't you?" She asked. "I was. Why did you stop me?" "Because nothing in this world is worth killing yourself over!" Kenshin paused and stared at the girl. Her face would seem to show that her words were sincere. "Even killing thousands of people?" The girl sighed. "Even that."
The girl then looked at Kenshin, smiled, and patted his head. "Hey, do you remember all those people you killed?" "Of course I do." Kenshin asked, growing slightly annoyed. "Well, I forgive you for them." Kenshin's eyes widened for a moment, but then they returned to normal. "Every person you killed, all the blood you've spilled, I forgive you for. So, now what I want you to do is to forgive yourself." "…Forgive myself?" "Yup. Sadly, that's all I can do for you. I wish you luck." The girl turned and left through the window again. Kenshin watched her go, and then closed his eyes.
"Forgiving myself, huh?" He said, smiling.
From that day forward, Kenshin never thought about suicide again.
