The leaves rustled in the breeze. Shouts of playing children could be heard from the playground nearby. Petunia glanced downwards at the two boys - one skinny, one fat. Her fat son Dudley tugged at her hand impatiently. Her nephew Harry, who stayed with her family, waited quietly and patiently at her side.
"All right Dudley," Petunia sighed as she loosened her grip on her son's hand.
Dudley laughed and hit Harry in the side before running off to play.
"Ow," Harry muttered as he rubbed his side. He was only three, and so was Dudley, but the fat boy was much stronger than he was. Harry looked up at Petunia for help, but she did not look at him. She only stared in the direction where Dudley had gone, seemingly lost in a wave of thoughts.
"Aunt Petunia," Harry tugged at her sweater sleeve, smiling cheerfully.
"What?" Petunia snapped irritably. She had been thinking about what Dudley would get for his Christmas present, and Harry had interrupted her thoughts.
"Can I go play?" Harry asked, still smiling as though Petunia hadn't snapped at him.
"Yes," Petunia replied, still irritated.
"Thanks," Harry smiled at Petunia as he ran off to the swing.
Petunia sat down on a nearby bench, keeping an eye on Dudley. Occasionally she would find herself looking out for Harry, but she shook her head and snapped out of it. Vernon, her husband, disapproved of having Harry around. He would threaten to kill Harry whenever something went wrong, although he knew that no one really cared. However, Petunia did care. It sounded weird, but she sometimes found herself loving Harry more than she loved Dudley. What was worse was that Dudley was her own son! But it seemed that Harry had better manners than Dudley, and was not as spoilt.
Petunia would always remember the first day the two boys went to school. Petunia got their lunch bags ready, and of course Dudley got lots of sweets and better food. Harry only got half a tuna sandwich, and that was it. However, Harry still grinned happily when he saw his lunch. He seemed to be glad to even be getting half a sandwich for lunch! But Dudley whined about how little candy he got, though he got almost three-quarters of a bag full of it. Vernon had to run out to the store to get candy for Dudley. Then, when it was time for school, Dudley made a big fuss and refused to get into the car. Harry was already sitting in it, waiting patiently. Vernon was busy with work, and didn't have the time to send the boys off. So when they finally managed to get to school, Dudley rushed off without saying, "Goodbye!" while Harry stood behind the school gate and waved to Petunia.
"Mummy," Dudley pulled himself up the chair as he sat closer to his mum.
"Yes, sweets?" Petunia asked, cooing softly.
"Can I get the candy there?" Dudley asked, pointing to the candy store.
"Okay, dear, just not too much," Petunia smiled as she emptied a few dollars into Dudley's hand. Dudley crumpled the notes in his hand as he rushed to get candy.
Harry, on the other hand, just sat next to Petunia, waiting patiently as usual.
"Don't you want any candy?" Petunia blurted out, unable to bear the silence of the boy next to her.
"No, Aunt Petunia. I don't want candy. But thank you for asking," Harry smiled at Petunia.
Petunia turned around, away from the boy, and smiled. Harry was a good child. She would make sure he didn't get hurt from anything. She would pretend to be mad at him although she wasn't, as Vernon didn't want anyone being nice to Harry.
Harry was a good child.
