"What is this?" Luxa laughed in a mocking fashion, gesturing towards the table that Gregor had set out. Along it was laid a very fancy dinner setting, with candles and the fanciest dinner plates that Gregor's parents could find. They had made the dining room table in their townhouse stretch out to the maximum, so they could fit the large gathering of people that were invited to Christmas Dinner. Gregor was excited about that of course, but he was most excited to see Luxa.
Gregor had not seen her in several years, yet she did not seem to age. Her smile was frozen as bright as it had been 3 years ago when he first met her. Of course, the creases on Luxa's forehead and the scars on her arms were still there, but her hair had grown back, as had her smile. It bounced about her shoulders as she turned her head, scanning the room and rolling her eyes at the ridiculous decorations that Boots and Lizzie had made together - namely large drawings of weirdly shaped reindeer.
Gregor doubted that Luxa actually knew what any of the decorations stood for (the lack of life sized animals in party hats was apparent - of course there were one or two that Boots had made, but the overwhelming majority of the decorations were Overland stuff).
"Shall we eat?" Gregor's mom asked, bringing out a large bowl of salad. Gregor's head snapped back from his daydream. In a daze, he took a seat next to Luxa, who sat up tall and proud, like the Queen she was (her crown had been left in Regalia). Automatically they reached for each other's hands; Gregor's dark and rough in comparison to Luxa's pale, gentle one (despite being gentle, Gregor knew that it would be those hands that could slash through a rat's neck in seconds).
Luxa's smile was the only thing that Gregor could remember throughout that dinner.
