Only the Moon

By Nyx

I lift my eyes to see the heavens

But only the moon looks down

The harvest moon shines down!

I once believed in some higher power, something greater than us that watched over mere mortals and protected them. I had heard that the good die young, but I never really believed it.

Now I believe it.

Above me, the stars twinkle in their endless dance of light, brightly sparkling as if to mock me. I wonder that some of them are already dead; that we will never know until years from now when they finally wink out, the gases that burnt at their core spent and the light that issued from them gone. I glance at the Dog Star, then quickly look away to the other pinpoints of light whose name I know: Betelgeuse, Polaris, the nebula in the constellation Orion. Orion was always my favorite, the hunter stalking the prey.

The full moon shines on me, and I wonder whether the werewolves have made the transformation yet. Surely they have, and I am not safe; still, I can't imagine being attacked. Not after all that has happened this night. This place is already holy; it's unnecessary for it to be consecrated with more blood. Holy. Ha. Only holy to the memory of the terror that has wreaked such havoc in recent years, the fear I've grown up with. Behind that harvest moon, no omnicient being lurks. Only the darkness and emptiness of space.

Only the moon looks down on me as I gather myself up and melt into a creature of the night.

Only the moon is witness to my baying howl as I promise the stars I will get my revenge.

Only the moon brings light to the darkness that envelopes me.

Only the moon.

Dis: The quote is from the musical "Les Miserables". The implied characters are J.K.R.'s.

Note: Really, this could only work if the character is the ever-lovin' Sirius Black. What did *you* think?! Oh, and if anyone wants to request a book cover for their fiction, please do :)
