Gallifrey, just outside Arcadia…

A lone woman in fiery crimson robes stood outside a remote village. The rust-colored grass spread away for leagues, until it touched the base of the snow-capped mountains. The orange-hued sky arced overhead, the twin suns glowing behind the clouds. The place was indescribably beautiful, but the woman was only concerned with her precious bundle. A living thing squirmed under the blankets, protesting at being disturbed from its nap. The woman stroked its face, murmuring quietly to it.

She glanced up at the figure that had appeared out of nowhere. It stood silently, looking at the baby unblinkingly. The woman swiftly wiped a tear from her eye. As explosion rocked the ground from inside the village walls. The woman approached the figure.

"You can get him out, can't you?" She asked. The figure nodded.

"The Daleks wills be here any minute," Said the woman. "The Time Lords will be here soon, but the village will not survive, I know it. Regeneration will be useless in a crisis such as this. Please…take him somewhere safe, but bring him back to Gallifrey when it is safe, please."

The figure nodded silently. The woman sang a lullaby to comfort the complaining child.

"Hush now, my baby, be still, love, don't cry.

Sleep as you're rocked by the stream…

Sleep and remember, my last lullaby…

So I'll be with you, when you dream…."

The woman handed the baby to the figure, her heart feeling as though it were being ripped from her chest, as she continued the lullaby.

"River, oh River, flow gently for me,

Such precious cargo you bear…

Do you know somewhere where he can be free?

River, deliver him there…"

The figure took the baby, then pressed a button on its wristband. In a flash, both were gone.

The woman turned, as the screeching voices of the Daleks grew ever closer. She stood firm, her head held high, robes flapping in the wind as the Daleks approached. A singe tear slid down her cheek, as the angry screech sounded.

"EX-TERM-IN-ATE!"

A/N: The baby is the Doctor, in case you didn't pick that up ;)
