A long, long time ago

I can still remember how marching band used to make me smile.

I never knew that I could play

Until I started that first day

And I've been playing music ever since.

Band camp used to make me quiver,

Bored to death, no music delivered.

Scales played a hundred times, I couldn't take one more line.

We played poker that whole week

Waited for Capalbo to come and speak

To tell us our music finally came, "the Pit" that was our name.

So bye, bye, marching band, goodbye.

It's been heaven, it's been hell, it even made me cry

But I'll never forget the way it made my soul fly

Memories live 'till the day that I die

Live on 'till the day that I die.

Did you write the music out?

'Cause if you didn't I'll start to shout

We can't play until you do.

Now, did you believe mallets could fly?

But don't hit yourself in the eye

And trust me that it's happened before.

These pit rehearsals get mighty rough

What with all that fooling around and stuff!

We finally got down to work

Man, our captain is such a jerk!

We were busting out our rhythms so fast

That our section leader ended up in a cast,

But we knew the peace just wouldn't last,

'Cause "Pit", that was our name.

I started singin'

Bye, bye, marching band, goodbye.

It's been heaven, it's been hell, it even made me cry

But I'll never forget the way it made my soul fly

Memories live 'till the day that I die

Live on 'till the day that I die.

Now for 4 years we've been on our own

No instructor to show us the way home

But that's not how it's soon to be.

We had Kevin but he could just play the drums

And a face that made the girls' hearts run

He was hot, but he taught us not a thing.

Oh and then we got the "Great Erchan"

Who thought we all were Satan's spawn

Well maybe he was right,

But his teaching skills did bite!

And while Capalbo looked for someone else

The Pit, we practiced by ourselves

And we sang Buttercup for our health

The Pit, that was our name.

Bye, bye, marching band, goodbye.

It's been heaven, it's been hell, it even made me cry

But I'll never forget the way it made my soul fly

Memories live 'till the day that I die

Live on 'till the day that I die.
