Summary: The thoughts going round Sam's head after Martin is shot in Showdown.

A short one shot to keep things going.

On with the story…

It was late at night and Sam had just got home from the hospital. Now she lay on her couch deep in thought whilst the TV murmured in the background. Just hours ago Martin had been shot transporting Adisa Teno with Danny. Two bullets to the chest, one to the leg. Those we're the words replaying in her mind over and over again. She was thinking about the last few months after the break up. Things became tense at work and both Sam and Martin we're miserable. She would never say it to his face but she missed him.

Everyone could sense something was up and had tried to help. Vivian had tried talking to Sam but she wouldn't open up. Danny had tried to play matchmaker with them. That just ended up making things worse. Sam never truly smiled again after that sorrowful day martin had said he'd had enough. People we're calling it the case of the missing smile at work. This kind of bothered Sam but she just ignored them. The walls martin had finally started to break back down shot up again. A silent tear fell from her eyes and made a wet trail down her left cheek. It was only in moments like these she finally broke down. She had lost him and didn't know if she would get him back again. She would fight for him.

Two days later Samantha and Vivian we're sitting in the bullpen discussing the latest lead on their case.

" This kid was smart. He knew everything. When the cleaners locked up, when the janitor propped the doors open," Vivian said.

" Yeah, cunning and wounded, a dangerous combination," Sam replied jokingly.

" You talking about me?" Martin asked walking up behind them, one hand on his cane, food in the other hand.

Sam looked up smiling.

" Here, let me take that," Sam said taking the food out of his hand.

" Thanks," he replied, handing it to her.

They awkwardly stood for a few seconds then Martin pulled her into a hug. She put her head on his shoulder and sighed. Vivian smiled up at them then turned back down to her work.

" You look good," Martin said releasing her from his hold.

" Thanks, you too," Sam replied smiling softly. They stood staring at each other.

Vivian just smiled. The missing smile had returned.
