Ford's POV
Most of my time out on my own I've spent puzzling about the people on the Atlantis expedition and their dynamics. Colonel Sheppard and McKay were the most confusing of the lot. I never understood how they could be friends at all let alone as good of buddies as they are. They're totally different people in every respect, except the size of their egos.
Sheppard was confident and laid back. He spent quite a bit of his down time exercising, something the scientist would hate to do. Not that Rodney had any "down" time. When we weren't on missions, he was always working on some scientific breakthrough or eating while working on some scientific breakthrough.
Yet somehow these two egomaniacs had become fast friends. They were constantly trying to convince Dr. Weir to let them do dangerous explorations and tests. Once they ended up on a planet to investigate a downed Wraith ship and had to fight for their lives. That seemed to strengthen their bond, but there were other things before that. Soon after our arrival on Atlantis, the two were testing a personal shield. Rodney trusted John enough to let him shoot at his person.
They're best friends.
