A little moment set during 'The Sound of Drums'. I own nothing- I'm not that lucky.

"You too, huh?" The silken words with their oh-so-attractive drawl caressed the darkest corners of Martha Jones' mind, and in an instant she knew that her salvation had come. And gone, she realised with despair as the full meaning of Captain Jack Harkness' words caught her full between the eyes even as she found those eyes admiring his retreating backside.

"Bloody typical!" she muttered to herself, rolling her eyes as she pushed herself to run after her two companions. Here she was, in the stickiest situation she had ever been in, and all she could think about was how she always picked the wrong man.

As he hurried after the Doctor, Jack could not prevent his mind from straying to one of his favourite subjects: women. It ranked right up alongside men in the aforementioned list, and naturally there was a particular man on his mind as well... But it was a tricky situation, one that would take a longer journey than this jog to the Valiant to work out. Where to begin unravelling the puzzle? It was pretty much an established fact that he, Captain Jack Harkness, would flirt with any sentient being that crossed his path, whether male, female or hermaphrodite. And yet ever since meeting the Doctor, the Captain had concluded that companions were off-limits. Yeah, the Doctor's skill in picking out hot women to travel with made that promise difficult to keep sometimes, but what the hell, there was still the rest of the universe...

But what happened if the Doctor didn't fancy his companion? He had seen the way his friend looked at Martha Jones- there was friendship and platonic affection there, but nothing in the way of love or even lust. Whereas he, on the other hand... He had been lusting after Martha from the first moment he saw her. But he knew he'd never get a look in, not when she was so clearly in love with the Doctor, who appeared not to notice. And then there was the Doctor himself- Jack had been caught in a tangled web of love and lust regarding the Timelord ever since he had met his friend. And in fact... With a groan, the Captain recalled that he had apparently just confessed this fact to Martha, albeit not in as many words. That settled it then- definitely not in with a chance. Ah well, he'd just have to settle for seducing the Master's wife just as soon as they were done defeating the evil genius- Jack just could not bring himself to refer to the renegade Timelord as 'the British Prime Minister'. The words left a bitter taste in his mouth, and hell, he wasn't even from this planet! Sighing, he shook his head to clear it from the whirling thoughts. Such a shame that Harry Saxon was a malevolent threat to the universe- he was kind of cute...
