Summary: Pete's thoughts on the way to Colorado

Pete Lattimer turned down the flight attendant's suggestion of alcohol.
No matter how tempting it was.
He opted for coffee, the strongest they had.

His ears were still ringing from Montréal. Even with the protection of the earplugs.
His ego was still bruised from that as well.

Just when he thought he'd had a handle on the Warehouse thing MacPherson beat him.
Beat him with something he should've seen.
Something he should've known.

On top of that two RCMP officers were dead.
Because he'd slipped up.

Two officers just doing what they do every night.
Just responding to a call.

Pete's hand rested on the plastic coffee mug.
He should've been able to protect them better.
Should've lost them….drew MacPherson away.

With a sigh Pete leaned back and closed his eyes. What was the old saying when it rained it poured?
Not only do they have MacPherson after them but Myka….

His thoughts trailing off Pete looked out the window.
What his partner was enduring now was bringing up old memories.
Bad memories.
Memories he thought he'd put to rest in Florida

He'd been just a kid but everything had been etched in his mind.
Every image.

All the dark civilian clothes mixed with the fire departments dress blues.
The sound of the doorbell.
The cross and the shield as the captain accompanied the chaplain to tell his mother.

With an effort Pete shoved the memories back and took another sip of the now luke warm coffee.

'She's a private person….you may not be welcome.'

'I feel for her too, Pete….but we need to concentrate on MacPherson. He's going to know we're short handed.'

Artie's words from their earlier argument echoed as Pete signaled the flight attendant for another coffee.

Pete knew then as he knew now that his partner needed him.
Contrary to what Myka Bering thought she wasn't Atlas.
She didn't hold the world up alone.
Even the strong had their breaking point and Pete knew he had to be there when she crumbled.
If she hated him for intruding he'd live with that.

Everything in him was telling him that she needed him.
Since they'd become partners Myka had encouraged him to trust his vibes.
He was trusting it now.

Myka hadn't had too many people in her life that she could count on.

Pete thought he'd shown her that she could rely on him, could trust him.
Trust him with her past, her demons.
As he had with her.

That's what family was…being there for the bad and the good.
No matter what happened in the next few days.
He'd be there for Myka.
