Barbie is shocked when the wall of the tunnel crashes down and standing there is his sister, Melanie. She looks right at Barbie and smiles, saying to him and the group of Chester's Mill residents he has gathered, "Let's go home."
"Home? I'm not sure I know where that is but that sure sounds good," he says and steps out of the tunnel and into the bright sunshine and green grass. Nori pulls on Joe's arm and whispers, "Who is he talking to?" Joe shakes his head but says, "I don't know but we need to get out of this tunnel so it's moot point. Let's get out of here."
Everyone follows Barbie out of the tunnel except for Junior and Julia who are stranded in the tunnel on the other side of a wide chasm…and the now-psychotic Big Jim who is still above ground in Chester's Mill. Everyone is blinking from the bright sun after being underground for so long and smiling. Joe and Nori hug and soon nearly everyone is hugging or laughing in relief.
"Is this Zenith? I don't recognize this meadow," Barbie says to Melanie. She does not respond but shakes her head and points to two girls playing together in the distance. A third child, a baby girl, lies on a blanket. Barbie is about to call out to the girls but does not want to startle them so he calls out to the group, "Let's ask those girls where we are."
Back in the tunnel, the sounds of the dome shrinking are growing louder and closer. Julia and Junior are trapped in the tunnel. Julia is in no shape to jump the chasm and Junior won't leave her. Still grieving for his mother and Rebecca, whom he was just starting to develop feelings for, Junior clings to Julia, figuring if they are going to die, at least they won't die alone. All of a sudden, Big Jim crashes through the blanket of trees that fell down, covering the tunnel entrance. He lands at their feet, unconscious while a young tree hangs halfway in to the tunnel, narrowly missing smashing into them. Julia says, "Grab that sapling and let's put it across the cliff before Jim wakes up. Maybe we can walk across and catch up to everyone. They tug and pull until the tree falls all the way down and they lay it across the chasm. Julia and Junior carefully make their way across and as Julia starts ahead, calling out for Barbie, she hears a whooshing sound and then a loud thud. She turns around with a start and sees the tree isn't there anymore. She opens her mouth to ask Junior something like "What did you do?" and then shuts her mouth and silently nods at Junior. She understands he could not kill Big Jim no matter what he did. "I couldn't let him follow us, he's a danger to everyone," he said. "I know," she says quietly, patting his arm.
