Prologue: Dance of the Devil

My senses were sharpened. My energy was restored. I opened my eyes. The arena was still going through some decoding, the landscape still forming. The platform I was standing on was a simple geometrical grid. The walls—there weren't any walls. It was a black void. I smiled. So I was doing an open air battle.

Power surged through my veins. And then I looked at myself through a mirror I had summoned. My medium length hair was now to the floor in two full pigtails. Obsidian colored armor lined with teal layered over my battle trappings. It was lightweight and strong. They looked like dragon scales. My mask was placed on my face as the tinted screen came to a focus. My statuses were in the corner of the screen—heart rate, life points, stamina—everything. The mask made my eyes look red, distorting my face. I chuckled softly to myself. Neru had really outdone herself this time. Can't believe she found a coding like this one.

A clock appeared. There was T-30 seconds left until the battle.

My hair dissolved into pixels. It came back as short locks and a couple of braids. It was best to keep my gender hidden during the battle.

T-14 seconds left.

A beautiful sword pixellated into the arena. It was thin and sleek, with a pointed edge that was colored a matching teal. A large gem was at the end of the sword, where blade met handle. I grabbed it. It was as light as a feather. I never really liked heavy weapons anyway. A rush of excitement rumbled through my body. My stats got an upgrade. I was now agile and quick, strategical with razor sharp reflexes.

T-6 seconds left.

I knew this upgrade would have to be stored away. Wouldn't want this precious upgrade being to be worn out so quickly. Maybe I had some space in my inventory.

T-0 seconds left. Defender has entered the arena. Opposer has taken stance.

Opposer: Do you wish to proceed?

I waved my hand and clicked yes.

Very well. Let the battle commence.

The arena clock melted away. I smiled the devil's grin and charged forth.

And thus, the battle began.
