Title: A Burdened Avatar's Legacy
Summary: Aang reflects on Roku's words.
Spoilers: Up to 'The Awakening', episode 3x01.
Disclaimer: I own nothing of Avatar: The Last Airbender - if I did, it'd be a lot more messed up. And there would be a lot more pairings besides Zutara. So there.
---
I'm sorry Roku, but you're wrong.
You carried the responsibility of the Avatar spirit inside you just as I do now - but - you weren't immortal. You bled, laughed and cried as I do too.
Now it's my turn to carry the burden.
You insist on taking responsibility for this war all by yourself, but... you were human. Obviously and basically, Avatars are human too. We live with the people of the world because we make mistakes just as often.
We're taught the wisdom as well to set them right.
It's not your fault.
Perhaps you fell at the time you did for a reason.
Perhaps the god who gives us these powers set these events in motion? Your death, my discovery as the Avatar, and sleeping in the iceberg for 100 years.
Perhaps as well, the war was inevitable?
How could you take fault for something that could just be divine will?
We are incarnated and returned to the world as Avatars countless times to maintain balance. How could you take the blame for something that was predestined? Not everything Roku, is to be so perfect as to avoid armed conflict every time. Life was not designed that way, and it is a world we need to protect.
If you insist still, let me take this burden with you. Please don't let it weigh you down. I will set this right.
After all.
I was once you;
Avatar Yangchen and all before her.
Avatar Kuruk.
Avatar Kyoshi.
And Avatar Roku.
I am Aang.
I am the Avatar.
