When There's Homework To Do
Lavender sighed and whispered, "Lumos," flinching when light flooded over the page she was trying to read.
It was nearing midnight, and nearly everyone else had gone to bed. There were only a few other fifth years up, struggling to review their work. She knew that preparing for O.W.L.'s would be a killer, but not this much of one. She was having more and more trouble keeping up with her workload as the days went on. It was nearing Christmas break, and she wanted more than anything to get all her work done so she could relax in relative peace during the holidays.
"Hey, Lav," a voice whispered behind her, causing the tired girl to jump in surprise. She whipped around to see Parvati, smiling softly, brandishing a plate wrapped in foil, and motioning for her to scoot over.
"Oh! Jeez, Parvati-you scared me," she accused, moving just enough so that her girlfriend would have to squish against her so she'd have enough room. Parvati giggled and slowly unwrapped the foil, brandishing a plate of cheerily decorated Christmas cookies.
"I like scaring you, Lav. Besides, everyone needs a good scare every once in a while. You're a Gryffindor, aren't you? You can take it," she teased, then offered a blue frosted cookie cut like a stocking. Lavender gingerly shoved her books aside and and took the baked good, biting into ravishly. She had barely eaten at dinner.
"Your mum is a goddess, Parvati," she moaned, "And, by the way, with all that sneakiness, you could be a Slytherin, couldn't you?" Parvati rolled her eyes and flashed a rather rude symbol with her fingers. Lav giggled harder and swallowed the rest of the cookie, licking her fingers to get all the stickiness off. "Thanks for that, babe. Now, bugger off! I've homework to do," she winked, moving closer to Parvati despite her warning.
"I can think of much more fun things to do than homework, Lav," Parvati beamed, leaning close enough that Lavender could admire every curve of her face, the glint in her eyes and the lines puckering around the corner of her lips. She giggled and then glanced around, satisfied to see Harry and Ron frantically consumed with their own workload, before leaning forward and capturing the beautiful girl's lips in her own.
A war was waging, but for Lavender and Parvati, the presence of the other was enough to make Christmas good.
