Kurt Shipton is 15 and is ready to begin his amazing adventure in the strange world of Pokémon.

Pokémon trainers usually begin their journeys at the age of 10, but not Kurt, he wasn't ready, besides, he didn't want to travel on his own, and know he has his travel partner. 13 year old Tom Courtez, not only are they best friends, they are cousins.

Kurt woke on time as usual ready to meet Tom, and go see professor Jacob at the pokémon lab to receive they're very first pokémon. Kurt had already had a pet Goldeen when he was younger, but this was different, this was his very own pokémon, for battling, not just a family pet. Kurt had spent a long time studying pokémon and their characteristics, especially type match ups and battle techniques. Tom was already outside waiting for him, which was unusual as tom normally couldn't be shifted from his bed until at least two in the afternoon, but he decided it best if they just got on their way. Much unlike Kurt, Tom had not been studying; Tom was into poetry and spent a lot of time writing, simply because he could.

As they walked up the drive to professor Jacob's lab the sun went behind a large cloud and a chill ran through theirs spines, they couldn't believe they were finally doing this. "Hey!" said Tom quickly and rather urgently "that cloud looks like a bird" he said with that stupid blissful grin on his face, Kurt looked at the cloud, that looked nothing like a bird at all, but decided to let him keep dreaming. As they walked through the door the familiar smell of sludge and gas hit them, Professor Jacob was always a big fan of poison type pokémon, especially the three bat evolutions. "Ah! Kurt, Tom, please come on through" said that familiar friendly voice "we have a good selection for you today" as they entered the room they noticed 19 pokéballs on the table, 5 red, 5 green, 5 blue and 1 purple. "As you know, there are the 12 'starter' pokémon, from the four regions, and 6 new ones which I am delighted to say I discovered" he paused for breath "unfortunately, I cannot credit myself with that, as I did not discover them, please pick any you like, there is also always the option of your very own Zubat." He tried to make it sound good, he really did, but it's just not possible to make a Zubat sound good. Tom walked around the spherical table, looking at the blue balls, he always loved water pokémon, he looked each 6 over and looked at pictures on the monitor. He recited his 6 options over in his head "Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip, Piplup, Golwi and Toadit." He had always loved Toadit, but he also loved Totodile. After much deliberation, he picked up Toadit's pokéball, and walked through to the next room to meet the professor, leaving Kurt on his own, to decide on his life long partner. He circled the table, unsure even of what type would be best, he knew the rarity of fire types, the flexibility of grass types and the usefulness of water types, while the Zubat remained untouched at the end of the table, the fire pokémon Firlix's pokéball occasionally wobbled, indicating some sort of struggle, eventually he picked up Ignnot's pokéball, another fire pokémon, and left the room, just as the professor's Toxicroak entered.
