Chapter One- The Warning

We used to have a good life. one filled with peace, beauty and kindness. on some days, life was so serene that it was hard to believe that fear, sadness, and death could find a way in. Until the day the real nightmare broke into the camp and i watched my life crumble around me.

Sage was born during a hard winter. Her first ever experience was gentle purring, soft fur, and warm milk. Her mother was the clan leader Maplemoon and her father was Cloud. She had 4 littermates, Minnow, Rat, Fox, and Cedar. Once they reached the age of 2 big moons, not a day passed that they didn't beg to go outside; or at least Sages siblings. Sage however, preferred to sit on a tall rock in the middle of her home and look at the woods, sky, and mountains. She constantly wondered if the elders were right and that the cats who journeyed never came back because that is where the ground dropped off. The idea of being stuck in this area terrified the little kit but there was something about it that didn't seem right. At that moment, the two tom kits whom she called brothers pounced from behind and landed on each side of Sage. She lashed out with her feathery, powerful tail, not moving any other muscle and watched, biting down humor filled purring as the scene flood out before her. Sages tail had caught all four of Rats clumsy paws and he rolled, yowling, down the side of the Fang Rock. Fox looked rather surprised at his sisters reaction and darted away, but not quickly enough. Sage pulled the same move and Fox was swept of his paws and slid down the other side of the rock. Once Sage decided that it was safe, she peered over the side of her majestic perch and saw her brothers grooming themselves as their fur had been messed up in the mad tumble. She chose then to declare, "I am Sagemoon, leader of Fang Rock, do you dare fight me, Fox and Rat?" Amusement shimmering in here yes and humor laughter lining her soothing meow.

"Oh no, Sagemoon, we simply want to see the view," Fox retorted back.

"For even you shouldn't be dumb enough to sneak up on your leader." Sage said calmly. Even though she was only 4 big moons, she knew how to contain her temper.

Green skulked out of the elders den, stretching her legs before growling at the tom-kits, "You should show more respect for each other, especially that sister of yours, she's a feisty one, ain't she?"

"Yes Green," Fox and Rat replied instantaneously before bounding away as they knew that the old she-cat would forgive them easily. Sage went back to looking out from her perch and she realized something was wrong. From her perch she could usually hear birds twittering all round but today they were silent.

She remembered the old elders tale about the only time that all the birds went silent and the only sound was yours and those you loved heartbeats and the pounding footsteps of the herd of nightkillers or darkhowlers. The story had always hung with the young kit and the story flooded back into her mind. The giant dog-like creatures surrounding the camp, picking off whoever left the camps safety. The cats were confined inside, slowly starving to death. The nightkillers were the size of six cats, had long scruffy tails, had the scent of blood all over them and their eyes, oh their eyes, they burned with hatred, hunger, and the desire to kill.

All these images flooded into her head from who knows where but she knew she had to warn the camp, so that they could prepare for what was coming, because deep down, Sage knew that death had RSVP'd and that it would be arriving soon.
