Harry nearly fainted for the second time that day when he heard the infant cry. The boy was small and covered in Merlin knew what, but Harry did not care. He was trembling with adrenaline and nervousness and more love than he had ever thought it was possible for someone to feel.
He kissed his wife's forehead and pulled strands of hair from her sweat covered face. "You did brilliantly," he whispered.
"Better than you," she panted, as she squeezed his hand. It was gentle compared to the way she nearly crushed it two minutes prior.
"A lot better than me," he laughed.
When the Healer brought the wriggling bundle over to him his breath caught and his vocabulary forgotten. He carefully took the infant into his arms and his heart swelled so much he thought it would burst and he would die right there. He bent down so that Ginny could see the child, their child, and she touched his tiny hand gently.
Harry was a father.
He found his voice and whispered "I love you" to his son, James.
