"What the hell, Ma?" Jane yelled at her mother. She had never seen Ma so mad in all her life. But then again, it wasn't every day you found your daughter kissing the ME of Massachusetts.

"Don't you 'what the hell' me, Janie!" Angela said back in almost as much rage. "Why are you kissing Maura? I thought you were with Casey. How could you turn and choose this whole gay thing on me?"

"I didn't choose this, Ma. I'm in love with Maura, okay?" She almost didn't believe the words that came out of her mouth. She had always thought it, they had said 'I love you' to each other plenty of times, but never until now had she heard those exact words out loud. And they sounded absolutely perfect. "Can't you just accept that?"

"Janie, you have pulled quite some crap with me before, but nothing like this…" she said, her tone becoming more somber. "You- you can't be gay. There has to be another explanation."

"Yeah, Ma, I'm bisexual. And I love Maura. You've got to understand," she pleaded with her mother only to hear silence, apart from a stifled sniffle. "God, Ma, say something,"

"Okay, you want me to say something? Why don't you just go for the guys then if you're bisexual? Didn't you ever consider how I'd feel about all this? What about grandchildren?" Angela was furious now, tears streaming.

"I- Ma, it's not that simple." Jane said almost sheepishly. She never meant to fall for Maura. But you spend enough time around someone you're compatible with and something's bound to happen. They only got together a month ago, though the flame had been there for quite a while now. She was surprised it had stayed a secret for that long.

"First your father, then Tommy and now you? Who can I trust in this family anymore?" she asked rhetorically. Jane was going to reply, but she couldn't as Angela left for the guest house, crying her heart out.

Maura had just been standing there, dumbfounded by what she had heard. Jane stood there in disbelief. She knew that her mom would disapprove of them hiding their relationship, but by being with Maura at all? Jane started tearing up. Maura came up to her from behind and hugged her at the waist.

"Jane…" Maura asked, concerned.

"What happened to 'you couldn't help who you love'?" she asked Maura. "Does it not apply to her kids? Maura, what did I do?" this time her tone taking on one of desperation, like she could fix what just happened and turn everything back to the way it was.

Maura led her to the couch for them both to sit down in the living room where they had been spotted making out only minutes before. Maura tried to comfort her in the only way she knew how. "Jane, your mother is experiencing a change in her psyche. She's now dealing with the loss of her image of you as her straight daughter. She's going to be grieving over that. I'm sure as soon as she settles down she'll be more rational," she said in her best comforting Google voice.

"Maur, she hates me! She'd never want me to date a woman, no matter how 'rational' she might be after this. Oh god Maura, why can't she just accept us?" she asked, crying herself now despite herself.

Maura wiped away the tears running along Jane's cheeks. "I don't know, Jane. Some people just can't handle it." she said sadly. "But remember I'm here. I love you," she half-smiled, trying to get a grin on Jane's face.

"I love you too, Maura." she said, still crying but not as much. She held Maura close and they just sat there, trying to enjoy each other's company rather than think about what had just happened. It was going to be one hell of a fallout.
