All usual disclaimers apply. There is dialogue close to or from the original text, unfortunately I could not find a copy of the book while I was writing this, but Ash's thoughts are mine. Enjoy
The scene where Ash becomes Meghan's knight. Ash's words will be in bold and Meghan's in italics.
She didn't have it in her to be intentionally cruel. That much I know. But, when she talked of releasing me from my vow the only thing I could feel was sorrow. Now she is talking to Grimalkin, but I can't quite tell what they are talking about. I only want to get away from here before she is allowed to return to the NeverNever. It would be too much to watch her return to a place that she has only known about for a little window of time while I am barred from my home.
It will kill me to see her go I just know it.
"If you are going to release me from my vow, do it now. I would like to be gone before you return."
"Ash...I… Would you be my knight?" I couldn't believe my ears at her stammered request. A million thoughts ran through my head at once. If I were to go back only to have Mab pronounce it treason, what would I do then? And why now was she asking me to take an even bigger oath than the one she was talking about releasing me from? It didn't matter, this proved that she trusted me above everyone else, and that she would chose me instead of Puck.
"Grimalkin explained the significance, I would never force you…" even as she said this I dropped to my knees. I could barely raise my voice above a whisper as I spoke the words that would bind me forever to the one who had broken down the barriers around my heart and placed in a new cage that only she could open.
"My name is Ashallyn'darkmyr Tallyn, third son of the Unseelie Court...Let it be known-from this day forth, I vow to protect Meghan Chase, daughter of the Summer King, with my sword, my honor, and my life. Her desires are mine. Her wishes are mine. Should even the world stand against her, my blade will be at her side. And should it fail to protect her, let my own existence be forfeit. This I swear, on my honor, my True Name, and my life. From this day on..." My voice lowered even further as I stood and whispered into her ear so that only she would hear. "I am yours."
I couldn't believe it. I took the vow and felt a fundamental shift within me. I had never felt more at peace than that moment when I became my lady's knight. No truer words have ever been spoken than that final sentence. I was hers before, now she knew it and nobody could tear me from her side. I couldn't be happier that I was chosen for this honor. But, I knew that the vow was just a formality. I would have protected her until my last breath before this if she would have allowed it. I would not have been able to survive her passing this just insured that I wouldn't have to. As I lay beside her, I felt at home. I was ready for whatever lay ahead.
I don't know if I want to continue it. Reviews would help!
