What She Didn't Know
She was walking on the pier, hand in hand with the doctor, her red-gold hair whipping in the breeze. Her hazel eyes sparkled when he leaned close to whisper something in her ear. He forced himself to turn away from the sight.
She wasn't available. He told himself that every time he saw her and his heart kicked in his chest. The attraction to her would pass. It was just temporary.
If you hadn't been so slow to make a move, you could be walking with her.
She was a junior officer. And a marine, at that. He was a Major in the Air Force. And her commanding officer as well as their team leader
Laura Cadman was most definitely off limits.
She didn't know that he recognised little things about her. Like the way she bit her lip when she was concentrating on something, or twirled a strand of hair around her index finger when she was bored. Or the way she laughed at horror movies and cried at chick flicks.
She had threatened him with painful death if he ever revealed that.
She didn't know that in the year that she had been a member of his team that he had sat at her bedside in the infirmary when she had been injured more than he had any of the other team members. She didn't know that Jennifer had threatened to throw hi m out bodily the time she had been shot off world and had been unconscious for twenty four hours.
She didn't know that he had to stick his hands in his pockets to keep from tucking her hair behind her ears sometimes.
She didn't know that last year, on New Year's Eve, he had pressed his nose to her hair for a split second and inhaled her scent, allowing himself to wonder, just for that split second, what it would be like to kiss her.
Laura Cadman didn't know that Evan Lorne was in love with her. And he wouldn't tell her. Because she was happy with Carson.
And she didn't know that he loved her smile best of all.
A/N : Rowena says it could be classed as a prequel to Coming Back Home. I hadnt intended it to be, but I do see where she's coming from! Hope you liked it.
